Description I admit these pictures are quite blurry but they still are quite effective to help out in rat anatomy. One day I'll get a better camera and get some better rat movement pics. This is really a photo dump which I decided to post seeing as we seem to lack a lot of pictures of rats in unusual poses (pretty much any movement poses). Quite a few of these don't seem worth it but others are quite amazing. I love the super rat pose, can you guess which one that is? XD

The rat in this picture was really the only one that co-operated with me and my sister for the shots. The rat, is a doe, and is called Wilde (with the "e") or Evil (old nickname). Her real name is Libero.

That is so cute! I really like the more tame rats that can be kept as pets. I want one :] this is a good idea, by the way.

I must agree, I miss owning rats but the rule of thumb is to always have two. Not only is it twice as fun but it keeps them from developing severe psychological issues (they're really social animals XD).

Thankyou as well

It happens a lot, it's funny how you can find a near similar rat when there are so many variations out there XD

I keep wishing I had a manual camera to take non-blurry pictures but I didn't XD. I don't live near my rats anymore (living on campus at uni) but I'll be taking plenty of pictures of my rats in July when I see them next! For now I'll see what I've got stored on disc

Aww! I love the super rat pose too! these are really great! my girls run crazy around my house, but I never thought to try to capture their movement! they are soooooo fast!

pandemoniumfire In reply to mragonrider [2011-02-28 22:47:08 +0000 UTC]

They are defiantly quick! A tip on capturing them is to take the picture a second before they actually enter the camera view. By the time the camera actually takes the shot they should be in the screen XD

Rather fast rat. I like picture #2 and 3 (from left to right, like reading).

By the way, if you love your rat, don't take it outside, there are many dangers, like parasites and viruses as well as bacteria. Rats are really sensitive to those, also they are neophob (dislike new environments), so this situation is highly stressful and also the tamest rat could easily be scarred by a shadow and run away. There's even the threat of other people who dislike rats. Also, their fur don't grow like the fur of wild rats, they never wear a thick one, so they can get colds pretty easily.
There are even stories of rats being caught by (wild) dogs or cats.

There's a big webpage about that matter: [link] Sadly, it's in german. But I've shown you all important things.

Despite your generous warnings, I'm afraid I'm in a different situation. My rats biggest risk is heat stroak, there is very little chance (perhaps in the thick of winter) that any rat could die of cold in Australia where I live unless it is at night. My rats are not skittish and I always bring them in the carrier so they can run to a safe place if they get scarred. The seven rats I took out, only 2 of them didn't leave the cage the others were too busy exploring. Again, in my backyard so no stray dogs or cats can get them, my own dog and cat are locked away and I make sure we are in a shaded or covered area to lessen the chance of a kookaburra as well as always keeping my eyes on the sky as well as the rodents. I've found that the rats I let explore outside live longer than those that I don't (yes I had a period for a year were a generation, from different litters, never went outside).

I do feel that you are telling me of a little bit and I'm fully aware of the dangers. My rats are not scared (except for a very few) or exploring and don't freak out. I'm always within a foot step of them. They aren't stressed, if anything they are excited. As soon as I take their carrier outside, their are trying to get their noses through the bars XD They love being outside!

P.S I think that there is also a difference in rats depending on location. A sea can make all the difference.

Yeah, I had rats too and they LOVED exploring our garden. When I took their cage onto the grass they were basically jumping to get out of it. They loved running around and exploring the bushes in our garden. I always watched them and was careful of any cats etc.

You're right, rats do like going outside their cages It's fun watching too.

I see. I just had the feeling of telling you. I also know that in Australia it's usually very warm if not hot but I wasn't too sure about that

Some people put them outside in the middle of nowhere and not in their backyard. Other people love to carry their rats around on their shoulder (right in the city) and bad things happened...

It's a great thing that you use a carrier so they can always make the choice on their own. Take care!

pandemoniumfire In reply to Duzloo [2010-09-17 10:04:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'd never take a rat on a shoulder in the city, apart from not being able to enter a shop, a bird could swoop down and it eat!
