Description Sketch for a piece of art I'm working on. Actually one of two pieces, the other will be called "Burning Rose" and take place while Ashfur is alive, while this one is while he's dead.
While trying to make some fanart for the Pigeon AMV, Oleander popped back into my head, and with it a concept!
- Oleanders represent Ashfur, with how his obsessive love is "poisoning" him, hence the title of this piece
I feel like the meaning behind them(at least according to Google's first result) also fits, especially the complicated and desire parts.
- Roses represent Squirrelflight for her beauty and how delicate he views her, hence the title of the next piece
These specifically change to white and yellow roses when around Ashfur, and half/half when around him and another cat.
(Normally red, because I think of that as the "default" color everybody first thinks of for roses.)
- Hollyleaf is represented through multiple flowers, including oleanders, to show confusion with who she is and tie her to other cats who have the same flowers. Her specific flower is cinquefoils, for the beloved daughter meaning. I like to think these would only really start to be noticeable as she's dying, where most of the other flowers start to wilt on her as these ones grow.
- Jayfeather gets Aquilegias because jay flower = jay feather, he isn't very important to the art sadly so I didn't want to put way too much thought into it. If I end up expanding on the concept(which I probably will) I'll probably change this, but the flowers are really pretty, so that's nice!
- Lionblaze gets gladiolus bc according to the first result I got for them(usually I'll look more into these things but these are flowers for a couple of pieces of art about edgy cats, dude) meaning strength, courage, and apparently the Latin word for sword.
I felt it was fitting and the red color would tie him to Squilf, as well as for his own color palette.
- Leafpool has Hydrangeas, because of her gratitude towards Squilf, and I feel like the cool color sets her apart from most of the other cats while tying her to Jayfeather.
Pink carnations may also fit, with the "mother's love" and "never forget you" parts, but I like the idea of tying her to Jay a bit more
Either way, an option. May just use both in the end, who knows?
I'm not putting the most thought into this, so forgive me if my reasoning sounds a bit off, it's mostly just the first things to come to mind.
I'm definitely going to end up making more art for this, since I like the concept so far, but for now I'll save you the rest of the cats.
Ah wait Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost exist, uh
- Bramble gets black dahlias because of his reaction to Squirrelflight and Leafpool's secret, and I don't like him enough to come up with something better
- I almost gave him green carnations as a HawkAsh joke, but his actual flower is a mixture of yellow hyacinths because for some reason I think they fit, and narcissus mostly because of the Fire thing, for the selfishness reasoning. (I'd also use narcissus and probably a few other flowers for Ash, if I weren't set on sticking to the Mother Mother theme for him and Squirrel.)
Now we're done. Okay.
- I also want it to vaguely reference Hanahaki disease, because I find the concept interesting. I may do something properly involving it soon enough, but I do want to make sure I've made this clear: please don't consider this a Hanahaki au or something like that, the only thing meant to be similar to it is the flowers and the fact that the cats sometimes have them in their throat, but it's AFTER death and only caused by the fact they died, sometimes
It may not seem like it but I'm actually very excited to make this, and while I have no problem with Hanahaki, I feel like I'm eventually going to put a lot of work into it and it'd just be nice if they weren't considered the same thing?
That being said I don't think the idea is original or something, I've seen plenty of Warriors content with flower symbolism, I just wanted to give my own take on it.
More stuff about the flowers in general:
- grow even more on a cat's body during/after death, are shown on ghost cats of any sort(some with throat wounds have them coming out of their throats along with blood, as can be seen with Ashfur, though some have this happening either because they were poisoned or for no apparent reason)
- Dark Forest cats always have a fitting poisonous flower growing on their paws, different from their normal flower even if that flower is poisonous. An exception is made for cats that wouldn't have a fitting poisonous flower(or another)
- some follow the symbolism of the flower, some don't. Depends on the cat and the flower. In the case of Ash and Squilf, their flowers are just taken from songs, and don't entirely have to fit because of that.
- cats with serious injuries or disabilities(Briarlight, Cinderpelt, Brightheart, Jayfeather, Snowkit ect.) Have flowers either growing on or covering scars, important areas(or whatever you'd want to call them? Bad with words, sorry) or other things relating to their disability/injury. In the case of cats with them covering these spots: flowers can be removed, and are not properly attached unless tied down with something(preferably related to the flower. In the case of cats with them growing on these spots: shouldn't be on their face aside from very small flowers on fur, if possible, on skin if not, unless unavoidable(in the case of Jayfeather or Brightheart, to a point)
- grow from the start for cats born with it, either only starts growing or covers the area for cats who eventually get it.
Snowkit, for example, would have flowers growing in his ears to represent him being deaf, as well as on other places. (I'll share his flower design soon bc he's simple enough to draw)
Or Briarlight would have flowers tied to her legs/lower back, alongside the ones that grew originally.
- usually only one or two flowers relating to the cat, aside from Hollyleaf and maybe a few others.
- StarClan cats/afterlife cats outside of StarClan have their flowers at 100% opacity no matter what, since I usually draw ghost cats at a lower opacity. Wanted to make this clear, and it'll be seen on Ashfur later.
For hallucinations or other cases where the cat may be lower opacity(such as Squilf here), the flowers match the cat in opacity.
- (obviously) doesn't just have to be flowers the Warriors characters would know about, it could be any flower that fits with the character.

As I write this I am kind of sick, so I wouldn't expect this to be done too soon, but I figured I'd get my concept out so I don't forget anything.
