His words still stung, even now as she lay in a quiet corner of Mlima, away from the hussle and bustle of everyone else. Twice now she'd failed him, twice. And maybe he was right, maybe she was worthless, a failure, and useless. The first attempt did not take, neither did the second attempt. Was she broken? Was she damaged in some way? She didn't know. A single, silent tear rolled down her cheek. In that moment, Valeria wanted her mother, and she cried. Cried for herself, for the family she left behind, for the life she had now.

She was worthless, useless, a failure. And she'd be nothing else.
