Description
I loath looking at picturesOf myself when I was little,
Well, smaller than I am now.
Even though my childhood
Was a happy one.
Every so often
My mom makes me
Sit on her lap
And goes through every album
She can find.
That is…
Until I can slip away.
I can't handle seeing
My big brown eyes
Grinning.
Now they're cold,
Distant, sad…
I miss how big
And bright they were.
Now I smear on makeup
So that you don't notice
The sleep-deprived bags
Which have the veined tint
Of gasoline left out in the sun.
I'm forced to reminisce
About how long my hair was
And how my mom promised
To never cut it.
Pinky swore.
Until I got tired
Of it being pulled on,
Tugged,
Wrenched,
Yanked,
And caught in the wind.
My hair's long again,
But it's not the same…
As when I loved it.
Even then I was told to get braces
But that was yet another figment
Of my mother's imagination.
So I grinned and beamed in spite,
But I did it with joy.
I can't bear to scrutinize
My smile from when I was 5…
I can't look it in the eye.
I miss it.
I put up lost signs
Please return to…
But the new owner is too smitten
To return it.
And that is why, mommy,
I refuse to look at our memories.

Who owns your smile now?
(referring to the ending)
I can relate in that I don't care to have my picture taken and it always seems that I look funny when I see pictures of myself. I guess it's the same phenomenon that happens when you hear your voice recorded, it always sounds strange.
I do miss the innocence of childhood for sure. Everything was so dang simple back then. (and believe it or not, I include highschool in that statement) College and then life after (or during) only gets more and more complicated. I didn't have an unusually rough time in Highschool somehow I managed to stay fairly content.
Anyway... I among others can relate to your experience. Even if the past isn't fun to look at hindsight is often (but not always) 20/20. Do not forget the past because the present isn't nearly as kind of a teacher. The future brings only worry or motivation or despair.
(I really prefer to write things that rhyme too)

I see my smile belonging to another little girl that will lose it exactly the way that i did
I'm in high school now and i don't see it as being too simple (socially) i even had troubles in elementary school but I'm not one to complain. I can relate to missing being very young and yes, it's pretty sad knowing the future won't be much better.
