Description FULLVIEW PLEASE (sorry, otherwise it's a bit blurry ._.")

MY FIRST ENTRY FOR

It's a global fighting competition between countries, who are anthropomorphically represented by people, from a series "Axis Powers Hetalia", created by Hidekaz Himaruya.

I am Denmark, and for the first battle (theme: "cuisine, cooking and national foods") I am fighting the Turkish Northern Republic of Cyprus.

Uuuummmmmm... yes, Denmark is attacking TNRC as.. a... danish.... wait, WAIT, hold on, I got it covered! *shoots self*

But seriously, I will try not to make puns my regular weapon of choice in these battles. <.<" I just figured that for this first round I should draw something that people will get a good laugh out of [hopefully]... this was also inspired by 's question as to whether danishes (as in the pastry) actually came from Denmark. ... I will confess that I have not inquired into this question. However, it did inspire this short little crack comic to come into existence.

In my defense, I DID read up on actual Danish foods - and I must say that even though I was somewhat petrified by Danish cuisine choices, I am also thoroughly excited to try some in the near future. 8O (The "Sol over Gudhjem" actually looks very pretty ^^) And I totally get the whole thing about the rye bread, the "rugbrød", and how Danish people in countries all over the world are sad that they can't find it anywhere outside of Denmark - as a Russian, I am used to a specific type of bread, and unfortunately, I have been very disappointed to not find anything similar to it in the United States. D:

I am also excited that we have very similar words for "meatball" in Danish and in Russian. : D

But, cultural lessons aside for a moment, I must say that after, what, two-three days of slaving over this, I am so happy with how this came out. D8 I don't think I ever put this much effort into both the characters and the backgrounds (HOORAY FOR CRAYOLA PENCIL BACKGROUNDS! : D). So, um... I usually have comments on it, but I think I am so DONE working on this piece that I can't possibly come up with anything to say. |D

FEEDBACK AND CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ARE WELCOME THOUGH (and much appreciated, actually). I wasn't sure how to illustrate the surprise and impact in panel two, so I just kind of settled on the red lines going whichever way. <.<" I'm not sure how it worked out, but I don't think it looks too terrible, so I'll leave it at that (not that I'd be able to fix it anyways X'D).

Hahaha, yes, America's eating habits (i.e. consuming hamburgers at the speak of light) can be appalling sometimes...
I thought that meatballs were called "frikadeller" in Danish? They are called "frikadel'ki" in Russian (with the ' meaning that the "l" sound is softened). Is "kødboller" another type of meatball?

And thank you for your comment! I really appreciate it, and I am glad you like the comic, it is quite silly.

now that i think about, meatballs could go with both frikadeller and kødboller, all though the direct translation for meatballs would be kødboller. but i guess it depends on which region you are from in denmark. sorry if i confused you

PaperclippedMime In reply to Ariel0210 [2012-10-09 02:43:48 +0000 UTC]

No no no, not at all! Someone else has just pointed out in a comment that the translation might depend on the way you eat them (whether it's with potatoes or in soup), so that makes sense, although in Russian frikadel'ki are frikadel'ki. Thank you for telling me this, I really like learning about different cultures from people.

It is frikadeller kødboller are different, both in taste and how you eat them

How you eat them? How do you eat them differently?

Grue94 In reply to PaperclippedMime [2012-09-30 19:47:37 +0000 UTC]

Frikadeller is usually eaten with potatoes and a sort of gravy. It´s what i get when visiting grandma Kødboller belongs in soups, like Boller i Karry, (Meatballs in a curry soup)

Ah, I see! Thank you for telling me about the difference, I will definitely keep it in mind for the next time that I am able to visit Denmark (which I hope will be sooner rather than later!).

this amuses me XD Denmark looks cute sitting there.

I'm actually not a cake eater and I don't like rye bread eather (I'm a very weird Dane) but what I really like is candy, and especially one kind that not many other contries than nothern (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland) knows how to make, it's proven that the finish make the strongest liquorice in the world, and the danish eat it - and I'm addicted to it XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaperclippedMime In reply to FishandFoxes [2009-07-01 17:23:45 +0000 UTC]

Candy, really? : D That's really cool! Well, not in the sense that "What, candy, who eats candy?" but "Strongest liquorice in the world, WHAT". XD I myself am not really a fan of liquorice, but this sounds mighty intriguing! : D

WAH, SO SORRY FOR THE LATE RESPONSE. OTL

Wienerbröd, eh? Is that one of your favorite dishes? : D

Also, the Russian word for meatball is "тефтеля", pronounced "teftelia". |D

iWillBite In reply to PaperclippedMime [2009-07-01 19:50:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm from Sweden but it's a stereotype that Denmark got Weinerbröd. I acctually think they're called 'Danes' in english. ^^,
Cool, Swedish word is 'Köttbullar' but I guess you'll have a hell to pronunce that xD

PaperclippedMime In reply to iWillBite [2009-07-02 02:17:23 +0000 UTC]

UHHHH... XD Is there any special way to pronounce an "ö"? or a double t's? I know in Welsh they have this throaty way in which they pronounce double l's that is really fun to say and gets spit all over everyone. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iWillBite In reply to PaperclippedMime [2009-07-02 09:57:21 +0000 UTC]

Ookay, remind myself to avoid Welsh xD
It's hard to explain as ö/ø a part of our alphabet and just like all letters have it's own pronunciation. And if you go for any throaty pronunciation in swedish you're waay of, though xD For a Swede basically every other language sound like you got a **** down your throat.

It's (kind of) pronunced like this
sh-auw-t-búlarr
xD

HAHA, that's hilarious. XDDD

And that song is EXTREMELY catchy. XD I think I might have it stuck in my head for the rest of my life. <3

Is that like one of those songs that all kids learn in kindergarten, or is this just something that the Internet produced out of thin air and awesome? |D

iWillBite In reply to PaperclippedMime [2009-08-06 19:06:01 +0000 UTC]

The kindergarten kind xD I had actually forgotten about it til' I needed a soundreference xD

PaperclippedMime In reply to iWillBite [2009-08-25 12:18:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh my gawd, your kindergarten songs trump all the other kindergarten songs that exist out there. XD Is there any reason why there would be a song about meatballs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iWillBite In reply to PaperclippedMime [2009-08-25 18:06:04 +0000 UTC]

Haha now that you mentioned it, it might be a little messed up xD You never really think of that stuff when you're a kid though. I guess it's an easy song, you know, 'köttbullar, köttbullar' is not that hard to remember, even for a 3 year old x)
Totally random, but now that I think of it 'kött bulle' literally means 'meat bun' o__o what a messed up and at the same time fitting name. I've been looking to much into words lately xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaperclippedMime In reply to iWillBite [2009-08-30 22:15:07 +0000 UTC]

HAHA, that is awesome. XD You know, screw singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" like they do in the states. NO, it's all about meat buns. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iWillBite In reply to PaperclippedMime [2009-08-31 16:14:49 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure 'Blinka lilla stjärna' (Twinkle little star) is far more popular, but that's beside the point xD Swedes sing about odd things. Really, you can find english music about everything. You can find Swedish music.. that doesn't really make sense, but is poetic enough to kind of make sense. Ja. (I don't count the meatball-song to that xD)

sizliz [2009-06-08 14:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, awesome! So well drawn. x3 Makes me proud to be Danish again. :'D

Wow, why do I get so excited everytime I see Denmark fanart? 8D But really, I'd understand why you'd be a little grossed out by some of the Danish cuisine. It's a bit... well it's really tasty, but not really that.. yummy looking. >_> Danishes... that's what we call 'weinerbrød' right? We do eat a lot of that, but it doesn't taste like cheese at all. Well the cheese we eat in Denmark, then.. :0 Oh oh and the rugbrød, you're right with your facts that Danish REALLY end up missing their rugbrød when they travel. It's like going to a supermarket and there's just something MISSING. xD What's the specific type of bread you eat in Russia? Oh and how do you say 'meatball' in Russian? I love learning about new countries. ^^ If you ever want to know something about or get your facts right about Denmark, feel free to ask anytime, you'd get the truth from a real Dane, right? :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaperclippedMime In reply to sizliz [2009-07-21 22:42:59 +0000 UTC]

LATE RESPONSE IS LATE, SO SORRY ABOUT THAT

BAD PAPERCLIP NEEDS TO CHECK MESSAGES MORE OFTEN D8

At any rate, thank you for your lovely, lengthy comment. Even though I tend to respond late, I love reading commentary that people leave, so I really appreciate it. :3

The bread we have in Russia... it's difficult to explain, but I guess the characteristic of it that I really enjoy is the fact that the outside is really crispy, but still sort of bubbly and tearable, while the inside is really soft and yummy. |D The word for "meatball" is spelled "тефтеля", pronounced "teftelia".

Speaking of Denmark, one of the Danes that I spoke with here on dA told me that the Danish actually have better beer than Germans. Now, I don't know if you've ever had beer, so it's okay if you can't answer my question, but do you think that that's true?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sizliz In reply to PaperclippedMime [2009-07-24 15:44:40 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha it's okay, it's okaaay. :'D

You're welcome, I'm glad you like it, I sometimes tend to write really long comments so it's pretty normal that I don't get any reply.

Oh, well, the Danish rye bread is not very crispy. It's more like a bit soft, but filled with lots and lots of seeds or grain or whatever. I usually prefer it with lots of sunflower seeds. :3 But I think it's the healthiest bread you'll ever be able to buy for money, and Danes love it, myself included. I just can't eay sunny side eggs without it. xD Oh wow, that Russian bread sounds really awesome and delicious. And I'm beginning to love the Russian language (not just because I'm a APH Russia fan D: ) it looks really cool, I wish I could speak it. :3

Well, I'm not thet sure, beer is like a national drink in Denmark, everyone drinks it. I don't that much. But Danish beer is very famous around the world, I haven't been to one country where they didn't sell either 'Tuborg' or 'Carlsberg'. But on the other hand, 'Heineken' and 'Budweiser' are also pretty popular and they're German, but in Denmark we're always very proud of our famous and popular beer. And our own brands is the most popular ones here, but I guess that makes sense. I suppose I varys on where you are and what your taste are. :3

I believe that, hearing the same response from others, a "danish" as a food would be a "weinerbrød". And it's alright, I'm Russian, but I don't really know that much about Russian cuisine either. |D;;;

Nyuuuh.. Denmark. lol.. I have to admit that I was laughing when the 'Danish Slam!'-attack came ^w^ Great work.

And about the danish rye bread/ rugbrød: If you once come to Denmark you should give it a try! Theres a lot of variants <3
And yes.. Danes have a lot of weird cuisine choices. I am danish, and ironically I've been told that I eat weird food, even of my friends. ( Guess it have something to do with, that I'm born and more or less grown up at Morsø.. Since I haven't seen anyone in Jutland/Jylland or in Copenhagen eat food thats just half as weird. )

LOL.. This became one big food comment Sorry

Haha, don't even worry about it, comments are definitely welcome, especially ones about food. : D

It's actually very interesting to hear that cuisine can differ so much even within a country. Do you have any suggestions for what I should get on a rugbrød if I ever go to Denmark? :3 (And does this mean that I wouldn't be able to get a rugbrød if I were to go to Copenhagen?)

Also, I am glad that you enjoyed the "Danish Slam!" attack. Cheers! : D

Well. People have different tastes but when i was eating meat ( am a vegetarian, been it in almost 2 years ) i loved having 'Rullepølse' with Mayonnaise on my rugbrød. Leverpostej with agurk, or røget skinke are also very common.

You can get rugbrød in every daily store in Denmark. Ironic that i cant remember what my fave rugbrød is called. Guess i'll go shopping tomorrow so i can find out what its called ^w^

( damn myself for forgetting the english words for the food.. =_= __ __" )

Well, all weekend, for Hetalia I'm being Greece, Denmark (maybe Australia too) and Switzerland for my panel Saturday. Also, Justin Law from Soul Eater, and Keisuke from Togainu no Chi.

It's like this:

Thursday, reg line: Keisuke
Friday: Denmark, Greece (or vice versa)
Saturday: Justin, Switzerland, Denmark
Sunday: Keisuke, and MAYBE Australia.

MY HETALIA PANEL IS SATURDAY AT 5PM BALLROOM A.
THE PLUS SIDE TO THAT: THE MOMENT THE PANEL IS OVER WE CAN RUSH UP TO THE BALCONY FOR THE MASQ.
THE DOWN SIDE: MASQ LINE.

I fucking ZOOMED on Switzerland. I just need to remake the collar and he's like...totally done. But I'm holding the panel with an Austria and a Prussia...and a N.Italy. And a Sweden. And a Finland. Wut.
