Out of the USA, UK and Israel I've always wondered which politicians are the most stupid and dangerous, because they always seem to be equal in this regard. I think the UK has taken the lead for the moment.

ah hell, never say a politician somewhere won't do something incredibly daft, like Minister Bruton who introduced a new blasphemy law onto the Irish statute books.....it's a badly designed law that invites someone with an ounce of malice to misuse it.

Yep that's right a govt. here decided it was a good idea to get into the bully pulpit and screw around with religious issues.


Then again it's given me a bit of an idea for my alt-hist story i.e. what if the Church had tried excommunicating the Irish govt.?, not too far out, one Italian scientist was threatened with excommunication during the 20's for discussing Darwin's theory

you know; I can't help but think they may've had a specific group in mind with that....

the Irish 1937 Constitution was surprisingly religious in tone compared to let's say the U.S. one or the French Republican constitution  

e.g. Article 44.1 "The State acknowledges that the homage of public worship is due to Almighty God. It shall hold His Name in reverence, and shall respect and honour religion." 

It also defined the Catholic Church as having a "special" position in the Irish State....could have been worse Archbishop McQuaid wanted it declared a national church, the guy seemed to act like the Enlightenment and most of the revolutions of the 19th century hadn't happened. 

This is what the archbishop wanted inserted into the Constitution "“The State acknowledges that the true religion is that established by Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ Himself, which he committed to his Church to protect and propagate, as the guardian and interpreter of true morality,” the article read. “It acknowledges, moreover, that the Church of Christ is the Catholic Church.”   yep you sort've get the impression that he never quite got his head around the idea of freedom of religion.

And originally the whole "Blasphemy" thing was deemed to apply only to the obvious Christian churches, which is why the Supreme Court eventually struck it out as unconstitutional, it was a bloody farce man
