Description I followed a great TopMod tutorial [link] by to make this. Thanks sjoo!

(The full view shows the pattern much better)

The Technical Stuff
-----------------------
Shape made using TopMod .
I UV mapped the front sections in Blender . Took forever! I had to re-do it 3 times.
Penrose Tiler and Illustrator were used for the Penrose pattern.
Rendered in POV-Ray .
Gotta love all the free software out there and all the great people that make it.

This is based on a design by Bathsheba Grossman . She has amazing sculptures!

I haven't used it in a long time. I made the design in Penrose Tiler and then exported it to Adobe Illustrator to change the line thickness, and then to Photoshop I think.

Thanks for the credit! Much appreciated.
I can see where texture mapping that would be a beast -- never tackled it myself.

What a magnificent graphic - really enjoy the labyrinthian suggested by the rendering.

As a former POV-Ray user, I'm still amazed by the quality of this rendering engine, even if it seems to be a bit obsolete now ! And it's still a fantastic tool for geometric and mathematic renders.

Great picture !

Thanks. I have been lazy lately, rendering in Poser. But, yes, POV-Ray is a lot better. They still update it too. I ought to use it again sometime soon.

Hey cool, you use Blender. Me and my friend have just started investigating this program and my friend absolutly loves it. I really like this work too, sad thing its only in 3D, that kind of ball would actually look really cool at your apartment.

WOW. So beautiful. Where can I find such textures? I have not seen those kind of seamless textures.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parrotdolphin In reply to mehrdadart [2009-11-01 15:32:09 +0000 UTC]

I used Penrose Tiler, see link in my "Artist's Comments". It outputs an eps file that I take into Illustrator. I make a black and white image from it by thickening up the lines. The black and white image is used as a texture map in POV-Ray to make the white parts black and the black parts gold. It's not seamless, you can see the imperfection at the center of the ball, a little above center actually.
