i think someone cleaned his paint dripping finger on the metal surface, that's the only explanation i can find.

yes it is a kind of purple. but a lot like dried blood - not fresh "blood red" from a little cut.
not that i mean it is blood - i know it's paint.
i had to look up "shames", i thought it was unusual but not technically incorrect but you're right, the noun "shame" does not seem to have a plural. which makes this even more interesting. i was wondering if "shames" was a proper name in fact.
