I love both the still image and the animation. The lighting and the setting is perfect and creates great mood. My only criticism would be for the animation. I know she is not supposed to move a lot but some light movements would make her seem more real and alive. Even if you don't do much of that I think she needs to blink while she is talking. That is also a good subtle way to accent some of the words she is saying. But over all amazing work! Very inspiring

Let her breathe...

I got the movie score a few weeks ago. I was very disappointed with the movie I have seen at the theater when released. Not really the kind of David Lynch 'cause he's way to peculiar in his directing to film such a one of a kind writing. I mean it is difficult to have two strong artists on the same project, too many conflicts. It had to be a regular command film which script should have stuck to the books.

Fun start for a more than ambitious project. Even Moebius and Jodorowsky failled. Maybe you could give life to their dream and have a CG Salvador Dali as the emperor. In any case yours would be cheaper.

Great animation work.i like it.

Something it makes more realistic, make some eye twitching. The most beings are twtching her eyes. And lets move her fingers or eyes at the dramtic story parts.

Very sweet modeling! But in the future, when animating a mouth, you should try to move the upper lip a bit more. It's center especially is kind of static and it looks like a puppet's mouth..

Anyway, great stuff, like the story and kind of grew up playing Dune2000

Excellent colors choice as always (very close to a comic book illustration) the only thing that needs to be viewed is female'skin (it looks like plastic and not like skin) but all the rest looks pretty good, I like it.

PS Zbrush is pretty fun I will keep up my trainings sooner or later. The 3D universe is very interesting. Good work Pascal!

-Very nice work Pascal, I like her design and pose..

-The animation is well done I think, since she does not move at all her voice really adds mood and insight into her thoughts and inner feelings, which is effective..

Like the colors and the concept.
Maybe it could be nice to see a subtle movement of her chest when she talk.

superbe ....

As a dune's maniac I can say it's really great, Pascal! But to be honest, she more reminds Alia. Maybe I'm just twisted by my imagination and the "Children of Dune" miniserial.
And by the way, there's something not quite ok with her eyes, but it's hard to tell right now what it is. I will try to describe it later.

Great job and I'm waiting for more characters and animations! Maybe Ghani would be next? (or Ghani and her conversation with Leto outside the Sitch Tabr?)

This is exciting!
It's the first time I've seen you post any animation.
The lighting and texturing looks very nice.
Hope to see more of this soon!
The whole thing inspires me to pick up DUNE as well. I've never seen or read it before, but this got me interested.
Also, she might not be supposed to for some reason or antother, but I think a bit of calm breathing might add a lot to make the animation more lifelike. Just a push modifier with some very slow and subtile animation or something, so her chest is heaving and sinking a little with here breath.

Keep up the good work!

evilteddie [2009-04-20 06:05:58 +0000 UTC]

sweet work pascal, I always admire you modeling I love whatever shader you use on your models
the animation is good! but you could totally push some of those mouth shapes, it's mostly your closed mouth shapes like your 'F's and 'M's
on another note.
I realize you probably left these out because of time restrictions, but she could probably do with some very soft breathing, I also notice when she lifts her head she just kinda stops dead, remember to put some cushioning on the ends of your movement.

Haha! Looks cool! First animation I see from you. Well animation... Ok ok. Lipssynch work pretty very well.

Here you go for what I found as critics? Rest is cool, and most of all: seeing an animation from you is so gooood. Been waiting for long. Plus a Dune animation? Really makes me dream you'll make the ret of the story

Oh I have a last question: render is from max or is it vray? Didn't see lotof cool animatics with vray, why I ask. Anyway render (and obviously all image) is/are gorgeous, grats!

Definitely a great scene! I really like the setting as it works with that universe in particular. I was going to ask what suite was used and I got it half right...I figured After Effects was used for the short. The lip sync is really pretty good and I would have suspected Maya. All around great work, and the movie was quite fun to watch, as well! Excellent stuff!

Gorgeous still, but the movie is awesome! Had to go look up the Virginia Madsen to show hubby who she is. I didn't even realize she'd done the original movie myself. Looks like she's doing a lot of voice work nowadays.

magillaGuerilla [2009-04-20 03:27:45 +0000 UTC]

The image, textures and composition are impressive but Her skin shader doesn't look quite right. The sync seems to falter on a couple of phonemes but overall its great. The lighting changes are pretty cool but, like the Lynch movie, I found myself falling asleep - her voice is kind of hypnotic. If the character is not rigged for animation a couple of close ups or maybe a slow tracking dolly may have helped.

magillaGuerilla In reply to pascalblanche [2009-04-20 03:48:38 +0000 UTC]

You could render the backdrop on a plane and with a bit of dof you could cut down render times without sacrificing too much - its a hack but I've used it quite a bit to good effect.

What did you use to do the lip-sync - just a keyframed morpher?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pascalblanche In reply to magillaGuerilla [2009-04-20 05:02:05 +0000 UTC]

The animation is quite inspiring. Thanks for sharing. The only critique I might have is that without Subsurface scattering the skin looks a bit plastic-like, but even that isn't noticeable in the lower color space of the YouTube compression and it would probably be the same for tv. The lipsync was pretty sweet too, did you do it by hand? Any tips?

Interesting. She seems like a barbie doll, very plastic. The smooth lighting effects on skin seem to add to that for me, in particular.

The richness of the surrounding backdrop, seat, etc are quite wonderful, as is the unusual 'technology' (for lack of a better word) around her.

Thanks for sharing.
