How many hours would you say it took to just get as far along in the process as this picture shows?

how many hours do you spend on pictures that are like this from start to the level of completion where you actually are happy and satisfied with the work?

So you're doing all of the texturing and coloring in PS on a black and white 3D render, right?

Hi Pascal,
thanks for this cycle of help "do it like Pascal"

Did you use only the unwrap and photoshop overpainting or did you use some vray render by pass (by materials for example) to compose in photoshop and work with alpha channels ?

a question just like that ^^

I love the how advanced a model can end up looking after the right texturing... I personally end up just doing the basic colors and tones in 3ds with basic texturing here and there, but when I do something like a character where something like UVW wrapping comes into play, I'd rather skip over to photoshop and manually paint the details onto the final render

I actually rather like the 1st image, just for the tonal ranges

This might be a stupid question but, do you paint most of the lighting? I remember from reading the d'Artiste Character Modeling book, you mentioned that you UV project from the camera angle you're using. If that wasn't you then just kidding. Anyways, after seeing these production deviants, the whole "painterly look" (which seems to be hush-hush everywhere) is all making sense now!
