i love people watching!!!
you caught that moment as well! the stillness of the window, with the person (man? i think) and his cat, the stillness of those two, juxtaposed with the hustle and bustle of the crowd and fast movements below.
i love that sort of contrast. very interesting. i'm more of a still, watch and observe, and then do something entirely silly, type. although i do enjoy being still, and watching. it always gives me great stories. although i'm more of an interact-er type, rather than the stand near and watch. douggiedoo (a friend, on deviantart), is one of those watchers... apparently i talk to strangers and meet everyone... the easy way to say that is "extroverted" ... he calls it "flirting"... i just like meeting new people. i don't flirt with 80 year old woman, or married men, or married women... and yet, i'll be accused of it. i just like talking to people... innocently. i'm a people person.
sorry, i get defensive
another beautiful moment. thank you for creating it

I do too!
That was my friend's apartment in college.. we loved it!
Right above the food store... where you could get a ton of stuff for just a few francs.

it's possibly the best pastime in the world.
next to walking around independent bookstores, or smelling fresh fruit... or sitting on the beach in the fall, or hanging around the beach at night...
i guess there are a few more "best" pastimes than i realized... better watch my words next time.
but that does sound like fun! especially above a food store!

What makes this piece for me is the dappled light on the building and trees. I'm very new to drawing, and I'm constantly amazed at the kind of composition and details--not just fine detail, but layers of depth detail--people are able to conceive of. How do you begin imagining this kind of thing? Do you think of the light and directionality first? Do you just "know" where it has to go? Do you experiment in or on the piece itself until the right pattern emerges? I can see what works when it's there and draw conclusions about why and how, but I have not yet figured out how to go about creating it initially. Could you share anything about this process?

Thank you Eotena.
I would say that you build up to pieces like this.
Start with your main interest( in this case the man at the window) and build the rest of the scene around. Don't worry too much about all the "effects" like light and temperatures and things like that.. just focus on making a clean, readable image..the rest will happen by itself over the course of a few months, years, your whole life hopefully!

Thank you, Pascal. I'm working on it! I am learning from and inspired by your work, immensely. I don't think I ever realized how much patience art demands, but everyone tells me it can be worked at and to just keep it up. Merci!

The sign is what makes this picture work. You have such a firm grasp of composition and color theory you make it look easy; but it's not!

Fantastic as always! You know, I must say that here on DA I follow a bunch of artists, well over 300. But, there are really only about 10 artists on here that I get REALLY excited to see new stuff from and your one of em. Always good stuff!

Great focal! I love the busy street below and the restful, quiet apartments above. The cat is an excellent touch.

This makes me so happy--the variety of people, the awning, the dappled light, the calico cat, and that unapologetically bold sign! Nicely balanced.
