During 1933, both the Kadeszh Empire and the Tyaszhy Republic were developing the concept of multi-turreted tanks. In order not to be left behind on the matter, the Daltic Army bought from the Tyaszhy three units of the bi-turreted T-100, which was the competence of the Kadeszh Vickers Independence, for research purposes.
After some tests with the tanks, Foxter concluded that the better option was a tri-turreted tank, armed with a howitzer and a pair of AT guns, supported by as many machineguns as possible, in order to make the tank an effective support unit for infantry and a mighty mobile fortress as a single tank.
When the prototype was finished in 1934, it was armed with a 155mm howitzer and two 43mm AT guns, but the tests showed that the big gun tended to break or splinter the mantlet after firing a couple of shots, specially at high angles. Also the AT guns proved to be too weak and unable to penetrate more than 20mm of steel. To solve these problems, the howitzer was replaced with one of 103mm, and the AT guns were changed from 43mm to 76mm, enough to penetrate 80mm of armor.
Production started on 1935, with 40 units in service when the 1935 War between the Daltic Union and the Kadeszh Empire started. The first combat sortie of an AT-103 was, ironically, against an Independence. Several shots were fired from both tanks, but the Daltic tank only used its AT guns. After two minutes of fighting and maneuvering, the Daltic commander decided to use the howitzer, and ordered to aim the Independence. But when the turret turned, it got jammed. Though the tank could knock down the enemy armor using the main gun as with an assault gun, the jamming of the turret started to be a common issue. Apparently, when the secondary turrets were fired, the recoil made the main turret’s rotation system jump and disengage. The issue was fixed by changing the system for a better one, with chains.
This vehicle saw action through the whole front, usually supporting infantry assaults and sometimes even as near artillery support for armored divisions on assault.
Another issue of the tank was its size. It was the biggest tank in service with the Daltic Army, and so it was easily recognizable from air, making a favorite choice for attack planes. In order to add some anti-air capability, the turret’s top MGs were put on AA mounts instead of the horizontal ones, and a prototype was built with the 103mm howitzer mounted on the left secondary turret and a quad 43mm AA guns array installed on the main turret, but never made it to mass production.
By the end of the war in 1940, only two AT-103 were in front line service, with the rest being retired to training duty or experimental researches. In those five years, 250 units were built, with 50 of them being from the M35 version.
