Description
so i got to finish this... i think i'll redo it later, as the light and shadow look quite strange to me... but i wanted to show something before Jesuschrist Superstar shows start, next week... i guess i'll be quite inactive the next days...so, i based part of the scheme in a pic i found, and the extra detail is from my book "The Third Reich Luftwaffe"

Even more, the 262 was a project that started in 1939... it didn't flew until several years later due to the priority given to tested models after war broke out...

Pretty amazing. No wonder Churchill called WWII "The Wizard War", at the rate technology was moving. Another highly advanced aircraft was the swept wing, ME-163 Komet which used rocket assisted take off and was able to quickly intercept the allied bomber stream and get off a few shots before it ran out of fuel and had to head back to base. But like everything the Nazis invented, there were too few and came too late.

It had some sharky profile, indeed... gives it a more predator-ish look :3
Thanks!

Yeah, and the engines being positioned like they are make it look more aggressive, I think. Welcome!

The the whole design gives it that look... because of the need for better aerodynamics...

Yeah...but I was thinking, wouldn't it be more aerodynamic if the engines were up against the body, instead of hanging off of the wings? But I guess it does make it easier to fix/replace them from where they are...

They had a Me-262 version with the engines at the side... but it never worked, as the engines didn't get enough air (in theory, as it never flew)... that's the reason the 262 had the engine nacelles sticking out in the wings...

Okay, this has very little to do with anything, but I have some interesting facts about this plane:
1.) because of the way the engines were positioned it WAS a lot easier and faster to replace them. The engines of an Me-262 could be swapped out in about 4 hours. Compared to up to three DAYS to change the engines of a P-47 Thunderbolt.
2.) One of the lesser known reasons for why the Me-262 was never used as much as it should have been: The Arado 234 "Blitzbomber" was designed to use the same engines as the Me-262, so there were never enough spares for the 262's that were in service.
3.) As the cutting edge of technology in it's day, there were a lot of crazy mods to the 262, such as a limited-production interceptor model which had a 50mm auto-cannon instead the usual 4x30mm auto-cannons. The reason it was only limited-production? the flash from the gun was enough to blind the pilot for a few seconds, which caused a few to crash into the bomber they had just shot down!
4.) At the very end of the war, there was a highly-modern version in the works, which would have had the cockpit moved further forwards to improve visibility, and also would have utilized a prototype guided-missile for taking on bigger and/or slower airplanes (mostly bombers).

Maintenance on these engines must have been much easier than in piston planes, as I've heard. Reaction engines are supposed to be a lot simpler than old piston engines... but as every new technology, these had lots of problems... there was a Heinkel prototype, very similar to the 262, that used these same engines, in similar nacelles... but they were soon removed, because fuel accumulated inside them, causing the engine to burn in flight...
And I've seen a pic of the 50mm cannon-armed one... the front wheel flattens from the weight...

Yeah, I saw that on a show called "Wings of the Luftwaffe". I never heard about the engines on it flaming out, but I did hear that it was actually better in certain ways than the 262. (for instance, cheaper to make and repair, easier to control, etc.) From the pics I saw of the Heinkel prototype, it looks a lot like the 262, but the wings are straight, not swept back, and it had a tail like the He163, but less upward-slanting. The show said that the main reason Heinkel's model didn't go into production (it was ready almost half a year before the 262) was because Willy Messerschmidt sabotaged Heinkel's plans with some sneaky political weaseling.
Wow...must be a heavy gun.

He had a lot of power in the Reich... he also got the Air Ministry to cancel bomber production in 1943 so he could manufacturate more 109s to fight the american bombers...

I wonder how smart a decision that really was...but in the end he got his just desserts, cuz the Air Ministry didn't give the 262 the funding it needed until '44, so karma kind of got back at him there...
