"It's a mouse," the somali grinned. "Want to see me catch it? We can share...I won't tell anyone if you won't."

He scented the air again, hoping that his mind would remember the association of smell with the mouse. It wasn't that he'd never seen a mouse before, he'd just never seen one alive before.
Glancing at Kestrelpaw, he shook his head, "I won't tell" he told her slowly.

Kestrelpaw nodded as her response and immediately dropped into the hunter's crouch, stalking forward silently and gracefully towards the prey--something she had practiced many many times per day. She nearly stepped on a twig, but luckily saw it right before her paw snapped it in half.
Once she was within pouncing distance, she wiggled her haunches and leaped, landing on top of the rodent. She bit it's neck, a little clumsily, before it was able to make any noise. Once it was dead she stood up and padded back to Birchpaw, the mouse dangling from her jaws.

Watching with fascination, Birchpaw recognised some of the positioning that she'd shown him a while ago, but he doubted that he'd ever be able to move along the ground as swifty and gracefully as her. She didn't make a single sound as she crossed over the ground, and he held his breath so as to ensure that he didn't disturb the mouse she was stalking, however once it was secured in her jaws he moved forwards, "that was outstanding" he breathed, "I can only hope that I'm half the hunter."

"Ah, I'm sure you will be," Kestrelpaw smiled as she set down the mouse in front of him. "It took me a long time to practice--you should have seen Hazefire when I first started learning, I swear he probably almost gave up on me, I was so noisy."

"Well I'll do my best to learn from my mentor" he promised, "then perhaps we could go hunting together some time, when I've learned more of course," he didn't want to hold her back or ruin her chances with his loud paws, not until he'd learned a few things first.

Birchpaw smiled, a light rush of pleasure warming his chest, he allowed his amber gaze to meet her slightly darker one, before coughing awkwardly and glancing around bashfully, "So... moss?"
It was strange how different he was around her, he was friendly with Coyotepaw and Jackalpaw, and could talk to Primrosepaw, but it wasn't really the same easy feeling he felt around her, Kestrelpaw just seemed to have that affect on others.

"Oh yeah, moss." Kestrelpaw laughed, having been distracted as well. She bent down, pushing the mouse she'd just caught aside and gathered some moss together, scooping it with her paws. "Do you want to take the mouse back? I can carry the moss, if you want. Or the other way around," She shrugged, looking up at Birchpaw.

"The mouse is your catch, I'll carry the moss" he assured her with a light smile, knowing how proud Kestrelpaw would be to carry it back to camp and set it down on the fresh-kill pile. He pulled the moss towards himself, struggling awkwardly to get it all into his mouth, pulling a face at the peculiar earthy taste in his mouth, still, it felt soft and he was sure it would make a comfortable nest, he could share some with Kestrelpaw too.
Mouth full, he nodded back in the direction of camp.

Kestrelpaw mewed her thanks before picking up the mouse and walking with Birchpaw back towards camp. It was a shame that they had to carry things in their mouths, otherwise they'd be talking the whole while, but Kestrelpaw didn't mind. She didn't need to have a conversation to enjoy Birchpaw's presence.

Birchpaw glanced to the side as they headed back to camp, hoping Kestrelpaw wouldn't notice. She really had changed since they'd first met as kits, she still had the same youthful positive vibrance of course, but there was a touch of maturity now, she was taller, stronger and beautiful, in a way that kits never really could be.
He was so caught up in this thought that suddenly with a jolt he realised that he'd dropped the moss several steps back. Coughing with embarrassment, he quickly ran back to get it, hurrying back to Kestrelpaw's side, staring straight ahead, hoping the moment would pass.

Kestrelpaw giggled slightly, but knew not to mention it--she was sure that Birchpaw was embarrassed by dropping the moss. It was okay though, she wish she could tell him that almost everyone drops moss, it's slippery sometimes and tastes awful. If it weren't for the mouse in her jaws she'd reassure him, but alas, the moment seemed to pass.
The two entered camp and made their way towards the Apprentices Den. Kestrelpaw stopped outside the entrance of the den, putting the mouse down. "I'm going to save this for when we're done with your nest," she explained, nudging the mouse with her paw. "Then we can share it afterwards."

Nodding, Birchpaw slipped into the Apprentice Den, finding his way back to the spot where Kestrelpaw had started building, placing the moss down and starting to pad it into place like he'd seen his mother do. Quietbrook must be back on her Warrior duties now he considered, he wondered if it was difficult for Queens to go back to their duties after so long in the Nursery.
"Did your mum get back to Warrior duties alright when she left the Nursery?" He asked, as his paws worked over the moss, hoping to soften it up before adding it to his nest.
Kestrelpaw's mother, Barleyleap would have left the Nursery a few moons ago now, she must be settled down again now.

"Barleyleap? Yeah, she's been busy." Kestrelpaw smiled. "I hardly see her sometimes, she's gone for so long. I guess she just wants to be useful. She frets over Saplingpaw a lot still, though." She shrugged. Her mother had often told Kestrelpaw and her littermates how excited she was to get back into the swing of things...Kestrelpaw always figured that it was so the rest of the Clan would stop staring at her, trying to figure out who her mate was.

"Ah," this relieved Birchpaw a little to know that Queens didn't seem to struggle too much when returning to their usual Warrior duties, "I'm glad your mother is able to keep herself busy," he dipped his head politely and genuinely. He didn't know Barleyleap, but Kestrelpaw seemed to care a lot for her mother, which meant that she must be a nice cat.
Finishing fluffing up the moss he began to add it to his nest clumsily, he'd never actually built a nest of his own before, even though he understood in theory how it worked.

"She kind of keeps to herself now because of it," Kestrelpaw continued, shrugging. "But I don't mind. I'm sure she's just really really busy all the time."
The somali looked over to see that her friend was struggling a bit with his nest. Carefully, Kestrelpaw moved around him and began helping, saying, "Here, like this," as she pushed the moss into position, intertwining it with some of the already existing moss, and tucking in some of the feathers that she'd gathered earlier.

"Thanks" Birchpaw nodded, beginning to copy her as he moved round to the other side of the nest, he focused on the nest for a while, then looked up, "So I was... well wondering... if maybe you wanted to go and make those flower crowns when you had the time?" He tried not to sounds as nervous as he felt, asking her if she wanted to spend more time with him, "It's just, well Greenleaf seems like the time to do it, perhaps on the way back we could do some hunting?"

"That sounds really fun!" Kestrelpaw agreed, nodding enthusiastically at the suggestion. "We promised, so of course we have to do it. And hunting should be really fun, too. I think the flowers have just started blooming." She'd been waiting all of Newleaf for the flowers to open their petals, and so far, none really had...at least, none she could pry away from Mothpaw and Breezemoon to use for flower crowns. But now that it was Greenleaf, the wild flowers were in full bloom, and Kestrelpaw had made sure to remember where they grew so that she and Birchpaw could go together one day and make the crowns they promised to so long ago.

"G-Great... I mean, great," he corrected his happy tone quickly to a more laid back one, going back to padding in the final touches to his nest, "when would be a good time for you, I would say today, but I think Spiderstep will want to show me the borders."
He was sorry he'd have to postpone it to another day, but at least they were talking about it now with promise. The first time they'd talked about flower crowns, there had been snow everywhere, he and the other kits had entertained themselves by building snowcats and bases, it must be very different for a Kit that grew up during Newleaf or Greenleaf.

"That sounds like tons of fun," Kestrelpaw mewed, glad to hear that Birchpaw still wanted to spend time with her even though they were both busy with apprentice duties.
((yeah!))
Kestrelpaw had settled down near the Elder's den where a pocket of sunlight was streaming through. The sun was beginning to set, and the somali wanted to soak up as much warmth as she could before it went away. Looking around camp for a sign of Birchpaw, she realized he was probably still out. She bit into the robin she'd grabbed from the fresh-kill pile.

It had been a hard day, Spiderstep had been pressing him about concentrating a little harder here and putting a bit more enthusiasm in there. The sun had almost vanished entirely from the sky by the time he ducked under The Fallen Tree with a couple of mice dangling from his jaws.
He dropped them off on the pile and almost headed straight to the Apprentice Den for a good lie down and a nap when he remembered that he'd suggested that he and Kestrelpaw meet up again when they were finished with their chores.
His ears perked, he was still tired, but he'd been looking forward to this all day, and there was no way he was going to let the chance slip away to spend time with her. He felt that the two of them had grown up so much since they'd first met as kits, he'd been visiting Timidbreeze at the time if he remembered correctly and had just happened to bump into her. They were still Apprentices of course, and he was still a fresh one, clear from his poor hunting skills.
"Kestrelpaw" he greeted happily, spotting her by the Elder's Den where she seemed to be munching on a robin, he smiled at her, tail bushed up happily.

"Do you want to head out now? I overheard Russetmoon talking to Marigoldfire about this place where there are apparently loads of flowers, I thought we could head out there."

"R-Right" Birchpaw nodded, puffing up his chest and praying to Starclan that he didn't get them lost, it was so much more difficult to understand the borders and the layout of the place now that the borders had shifted, and considering you could still smell the faint stench of Dawnclan and Pebbleclan where they'd been it was sometimes difficult to decide whether you were crossing or not.
He started off by ducking under one of the bushes, heading in the vague direction of the weird human track, he knew he didn't have to go that far, but that was the sort of place Russetmoon had pointed in.
"I don't suppose you've bumped into Springpaw this last moon?" He asked, remembering how set the stupid thing had been on solving the mystery of 'Cooties', a term Birchpaw was pretty sure no one above one moon in the Nursery believed in anymore, he'd told him not to bother the older Apprentices, and just wanted to make sure that nobody had been harassed.

Kestrelpaw ducked under the bush after her friend, nearly getting stuck, as she was still a bit larger than he was. She noticed that he was catching up to her in terms of height pretty quickly however, and she was sure he'd end up taller than she was by the time they were warriors.
She was a little put off by his question, as she had never once had a conversation with Springpaw that was longer than "excuse me" or "hi" or "are you going to finish that?"
"Uh....no, why?" she asked, her head tilting to the side as she padded faster to walk by Birchpaw's side instead of following behind him.

"Oh it's fine," he was relieved to hear that Springpaw seemed to have heeded his advice, or rather direction, "he's gotten it into his head that girls carry an illness called Cooties, I think he's just getting embarrassed around them in the usual way and thinks he's sick." Birchpaw shook his head, grateful that he'd never behaved that way when he was younger.
Okay, truthfully he was only a moon older than Springpaw, but it sometimes felt like a lot more.
"Did you ever believe in Cooties when you were a kit?" He asked, pausing slightly to gather his bearings, he was pretty sure they should of reached a clearing he'd thought was here.
Where were they? Was it possible he'd gotten them lost?
...No, he had a great sense of direction and he was smarter than the average Apprentice, there was no way he'd gotten them lost.
((I think I'm going to give Birchpaw a terrible sense of direction ;^_^))

He turned his head in the direction she'd pointed in, and sure enough he caught the scent of flowers, "it must be that way" he agreed.

Birchpaw was relieved to see the forest open up into a glade, full of flowers, he wasn't quite sure if this was the place Russetmoon had been talking about, but at least they'd found something that resembled what he was looking for.
"This looks good" he nodded approvingly, stepping forwards before hesitating, he then chuckled lightly, glancing down at the ground with embarrassment, "you know it sounds crazy after how much we talked about it, but I don't actually know how to make a flower crown."

"I don't either," she admitted, "but we didn't know how to build snow cats either, but we figured it out. Reaching up to one of the trees as he spotted some sap, Birchpaw realised he now had to consider a good way of collecting it. Spotting one of the wide-fanned leaves on a lower branch he pulled it off, ignoring the foul taste you always got when biting down on a plant. He stood on his hindlegs, paws braced against the tree, patting the leaf over the sap.
The leaf felt heavier when he pulled away so he must have gotten some of it.

Kestrelpaw had gathered a good pawful of flowers by the time she looked up to see Birchpaw with a wide leaf full of tree sap. She smiled at him, impressed he thought to carry it all here on a leaf instead of on his paws or fur.

"So you think this will all work?" He placed the leaf down next to the pretty collection of flowers she had gathered. He still felt a little silly. They'd been kits when they'd first talked about doing this, was it possible they should have grown out of the idea somewhere along the way.
He sat down beside her, their pelts just not quite touching, "You... I mean..." He flustered with embarrassment, talking about things like this always came a lot easier to his brother and Puddlepaw, he cleared his throat, "You're my best friend... I just wanted to make sure you knew that."
Sometimes he hated how terrible he sounded during emotional moments like this, he was so much more secure of himself and confident when dealing with cats he could treat with indifference, or those he reigned superiority over - Kestrelpaw was neither of these, and he would never treat her like that, the problem was he was struggling to work out what sort of cat he was like around her, because at the moment he was a mess with very little personality to offer.

"R-really?" Kestrelpaw stammered, usually so confident in her words, but this caught her off-guard. Birchpaw, of all cats, was not very talkative about his feelings, and this surprised Kestrelpaw that he was being so open and honest with her for once. Though she'd suspected it was so -- after all, he was her best friend too, and the two often sought each other out -- this was the first time his own words had confirmed it.
She turned to look at him, her amber eyes meeting his. It wasn't very long before she grinned widely, her emotions plain on her face, like always. "You're my best friend too!" the somali reciprocated in a sing-song sort of voice. She knew Birchpaw wasn't very comfortable with being so open like that, and she didn't want to prolong the moment and make it awkward, even though she would have liked to. "Thank you," she gratefully added, before she flicked an ear and turned back towards the flower and sap. "I uh...I think it will work, but there's only one way to be sure!" the transition between topics was a bit forced, but Kestrelpaw tried to make it seem natural. She dipped a flower in the sap ever so lightly, using her claws for extra dexterity and precision, and put it on top of another flower. The apprentice waited for a bit before picking up the flower again, hoping the sap worked.
To her delight, both of the flowers stuck together.

Birchpaw coughed lightly, clearly embarrassed, but a light smile tugged at him as he turned his head away to get better control of himself before he turned back, sure now that his voice wouldn't be another octave higher when he spoke. He was glad she'd changed the subject back to the flowers, it gave him something to think about and focus on.
He watched Kestrelpaw dip one of the flowers carefully into the sap, she was using her claws, Birchpaw made note, it seemed to be a good way to control the movement than using your paws or mouth.
They both waited together after she dropped it on top of another flower, staring and hoping for a positive result. After a few moments she picked it up again, success!
"It worked" Birchpaw grinned, before forcing his excitement back down again, "I mean... I suppose considering the density of the sap and the shape of the flowers it was bound to work, but we still have a long way to go if we're going to make something that can go on our heads."
He picked up a flower with his own claws, dipping it into the sap and placing it carefully on top of another, waiting the same amount of time Kestrelpaw had, feeling a giddy sense of delight when it worked just the same as hers.

"It's working!" Kestrelpaw sang happily, grinning with excitement. "I'm so happy. This is so fun!"
Any time the somali spent with this brown tabby was fun, but this one beat all the other times. For whatever reason, making flower crowns with the tom was special. They'd talked about it often, so it was the fact they were actually following through made her ecstatic. Like, Birchpaw actually cared for her enough to remember.

The time seemed to go merrily by as the two sat together, pasting flowers together with the gooey sap, trying to mold it into the shape of something that could fit over their ears, but wouldn't slip down their necks, it was harder than he'd thought, and it was difficult to size it up against his own head in case the sap got stuck to his fur.
"I think I've got something" he announced after a while, patting the crown to make sure it was dry, before picking it up carefully with his teeth and reaching up to place it on Kestrelpaw's head, "does it fit?" He asked nervously.

Kestrelpaw dipped her head and let the flower crown sit on top slightly. It was a little too small, not able to go over both of her ears, but it sat comfortably regardless. Slipping it over one ear was enough.
"It's perfect!" she proclaimed happily, purring. Checking her own to make sure it was dry, she lifted it in her jaws and placed it on Birchpaw's head. "How does that feel?"

Birchpaw flushed slightly as she placed her own crown on his head, "Great" he replied lamely, "You look... pretty," he swallowed, glancing away with embarrassment.
He glanced back, "but I suppose we've finally done it like we said we would," even if he knew the other Apprentices would probably laugh if they saw him, Birchpaw was glad that he and Kestrelpaw had been able to take the time to do this and work it all out together, in a way it was probably better that they'd been able to do it now rather than as kits.
