Long ago, a great war broke out involving factions of humanity, demons, extra species and the divine. No one knows how the war started, but the cost was heavy for all factions involved. Yet, even when the leaders managed to end the war before further tragedy, the hostilities could not be quelled, so they came up with a system to prevent a re-escalation into war: should there be a conflict between any faction from these groups, the factions involved must send one or more champions to compete in organized, anything goes battles where winner takes all.

Fast forward to this seemingly peaceful present, this clandestine battle system is still in effect, and the many factions that have been formed over the years continue to battle for supremacy.
