A guy carrying a child uphill on his handlebars, coming away from the beach.Gah! I hate the way photos look when taken at the maximum optical zoom. Postprocessing doesn't help much, either. But there's no other good vantage point for this particular bike lane ...

Nevertheless, I think this is a wonderful capture.
I really like how they seem to be the only ones there and yet... it feels as if they own it as well, in their own, good way. The expression is pretty cool and the way it's in black and white seems to accentuate the atmosphere and mood all the more.
I wouldn't mind seeing a square made out of this, if you crop the left out and go from the right... if that makes sense.

You're absolutely right -- what I really like about the shot is the kid looking over his shoulder at the adult. It's that moment of connection that really makes it work for me. Which is related, I think, to what you're saying.
I have to respectfully disagree with you on the square, though. I think this one needs more visual context to achieve the effect that you like than would be possible after cropping.
