The fact that the deathclaw is ripping a guy in half isn't the most disturbing thing about this picture. It's the fact that it's looking at the vault dweller and grinning like he doesn't even care that he's ripping a guy in half, making it look casual to him, that is the most disturbing thing about this picture. So overall, deathclaws are disturbing, scary sons of bitches, and you just embodied it perfectly with this picture.

People are so excited about Fallout 4, yet New Vegas did not receive nearly as much hype. Goes to show what a few billion pumped into marketing will do for a company that only makes mechanically competent games.

New Vegas released two years after Fallout 3 while Fallout 4 is being released five years after New Vegas. People are just hungry for a new game, plus the E3 blowout made the hype around the game skyrocket.

Still, it's being made by Bethesda, so to paraphrase Mr. Plinkett, my expectations are so low they're right next to dinosaur bones.

Bethesda can make a mechanically entertaining game, but they give them barely any depth.

baffledbear In reply to draw-FIEND [2015-10-12 10:03:55 +0000 UTC]

That is just your opinion. However if you are into fantasy (skyrim), post-apocalyptic worlds, there is endlessly more depth than your average Dayz (open world game). Since your not, you won't get the hype.

Even though Fallout New Vegas had infinitely more content and was better made (and done by a smaller more dedicated team, mind you), thus proving that Bethesda (with its bigger budget and larger team) is lazy, with some fantastic PR and marketing departments.

rc48177 In reply to draw-FIEND [2015-10-18 00:57:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but... it really wasn't that big a jump. Barely anything mechanically changed. Yes there were new things, the faction system, iron sights, the optional survival mode. But other than that, its just a dessert version of fallout three. Fallout 3 was a huge jump. They took a series which used be turn based combat, turned it into a first person shooter, and had to make up the entire lore for the east coast since everything previously was either mid-west or west coast. It's not perfect, it has some bugs, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Obsidian built off of what Bethesda had started. Is terminator a bad movie just 'cause Terminator to was better in almost every way?

draw-FIEND In reply to rc48177 [2015-10-18 15:27:10 +0000 UTC]

So Bethesda made Fallout 3 Oblivion with guns. Big deal. And they didn't make up anything for lore. All they did was transplant and simplify existing lore to the east cost, and that's it. It was mind-numbingly black-and-white, with no impetus to use your brain to figure out who was the good guy, or at the very least the best option from a selection of assholes.

Bethesda didn't start squat, sonny. Fallout 1 and 2 were developed by Interplay and Black Isle Studios, the remnants of which were recreated as Obsidian Entertainment.  They used the full potential of today's tech to give us a fantastic story in New vegas. Bethesda half-assed it with Fallout 3.

Mechanically, Bethesda makes sound games, but their narratives are shallower than a pane of glass.

baffledbear In reply to draw-FIEND [2015-10-15 18:57:22 +0000 UTC]

So what they had a small team. Bethesda served them with a silver spoon.
Also, stop dreaming, they are not even a CoD in difference.

(The only reason they have a bigger budget, is because they are number UNO in the branch, lol.)

draw-FIEND In reply to baffledbear [2015-10-16 12:01:00 +0000 UTC]

And even when Obsidian works under other publishers, under different restrictions, they still create a superior product which does more than just play well.  It engages the player and forces them to use more than just their lizard brain.

EA is also number "uno" in the branch, I wouldn't say that that reflects quality in their products.

baffledbear In reply to draw-FIEND [2015-10-16 20:40:55 +0000 UTC]

I have played both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas to 100% in hardest difficulty but I do not agree. In what way does it "more than just play well". Why do they need "to use more than just their lizard brain".
Poor example. EA is more of a leech, so the quality of what they produce depends depends on the host.

New Vegas actually has you think about your choices beyond: Mother Theresa good and Beelzebub evil.  It makes you think what your own personal philosophy is when it comes to ruling a land, and then choosing a side that best reflects it (if any can be found).  You don't just go from point A to point B and kill shit, you actually stop and think "which one of these is the best representation of my values and the best for the Mojave wasteland?"  Because the game doesn't really hold your hand, it lets you choose which is the best course of action.

Ubisoft, Activision, who the fuck ever.  The point is, being the biggest baddest motherfucker doesn't mean your product will be good.

baffledbear In reply to draw-FIEND [2015-10-21 13:48:14 +0000 UTC]

It is true, there is more factions in New Vegas than Fallout 3 with a more varied ideological incentives, than the ethical biases between The Brotherhood of Steel and The Enclaves. To me personally I liked the clear stereotypical good and bad theme, because it fitted with the dystopian atmosphere.
If you think there is no moral dilemma in Fallout 3 you have not played the game.

Whether or not a game is good or not, is based on the majority opinion. So the point is simple. Example: If someone called Bethesda sells popular sweet rolls and if someone called Obsidian borrows the recipe and add food coloring. It perhaps makes it superior to some individual, but to everyone else it taste more or less the same.

EDIT: Commented own my comment.

draw-FIEND In reply to baffledbear [2015-10-21 17:07:46 +0000 UTC]

Whatever moral dilemmas there were in Fallout 3 were simple and binary. "Do I help? Yes or no?" In New Vegas they were multiple choice, "Whom do I help and why?"

You're using the logical fallacy of Argumentum ad Populum, which states if something is held by enough people to be true it must be true as a result. And that's wrong. A lot of people believed at one point that not giving women the right to wear pants was a good idea, I wouldn't call it right. In the same sense that Alan Moore's Watchmen is superior to Dan Slott's Spider-man, so too is Fallout New Vegas superior to Fallout 3. There's more character complexity, more interwoven and delicately constructed sub-plots and the morality is handled in a more realistic and intelligent, and more alienating to the general public as a result, way.

Metascore doesn't necessarily mean an absolute, it merely support my point. Also supporting my point is that Fallout 3 average score (of 100) among professional critics was 90+ whilst New Vegas only had 80+.
Addressing your point of New vegas being better made. Considering graphics, character and story complexity, I agree, but you can only ask for something better from a newer game.
Making my point more likely to be true, is that I only claim that Fallout 3 and New Vegas is about as good, whilst you claim New Vegas is superior.I think you went on using the wrong word i.e: superior, I suggest the words: better or more interesting approach.

And The Thing had a fairly negative reception upon its first release, but is now revered as an intelligent horror film. Critics and review scores don't mean jack. It's the value of the elements that make up a work and the whole that are important.

No, I still say superior, because even back in the 90s you had games with more complexity in gameplay and character interactions (if not complexity within the characters themselves), e. g. Planescape Torment. Fallout 3 is inferior, New Vegas is superior, because the developers of the latter put in more effort than those of the former.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

baffledbear In reply to draw-FIEND [2015-10-22 09:59:49 +0000 UTC]

The Thing is an exeption and a ground braking work of art which has got its fair recognition. This does means not that all critics (including yourself) are flawed.

Someone can even argue that New Vegas is inferior to Fallout 3. Giving the opinion that New Vegas does a poor job representing a post-apocalyptic wasteland. As a supposedly nuked desert with green vegetation and lots and lots of clean radiation free water. Also Fallout 3 has way cooler action effects (enclave droppings, giant robots and explosions).
Ok, the mojave it is more developed and organized, but again that is to be expected from a later post war period.
No, can't say their effort necessarily made a better game, just different and not "ground braking". Plus, Obsidians effort was not extrordinary, since they were not the only team on the job.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

draw-FIEND In reply to baffledbear [2015-10-22 21:51:18 +0000 UTC]

You miss the point. The Thing only got recognition after the fact and after people stopped to think about the movie itself and the quality of effort with which it was made, instead of whether or not it was done by a big-huge studio with lots of marketing power that makes structurally coherent movies. Case in point, any bigass action movie: it has solid structure and works for what it is, but people with a brain won't say that it is better than Oldboy, for instance, a neo-noir action drama that has more going for it than just the action.

They can argue, but they won't do it very well.
It was 200 years since the nukes in the Fallout universe, and New Vegas is more in line with the lore, considering the nukes back in the 20th century weren't nearly as powerful as ours are today, nor would nuclear poisoning last as long. Remember, Hiroshima and Nagasaki got unpoisoned in about 10 years. Not just that, but the game gives a reason as to why it's not poisoned and nuked to hell: Mr. House's defense system took care of the nukes that would've hit the area.
If action set pieces make a game, then CoD is game of the year for all years.
A difference in quality is still a difference, and New Vegas has more quality, therefore it's superior. They were the only developers on New Vegas, but they did use the Gamebryo engine, only modified it.
