Description
Eugene Shoemaker next to the Grumman LEM on the Moon, 1970. Photo by Geraldyn "Jerrie" Cobb. The astronaut is Max Grueter's excellent sketchup model.
...The egress platform seems very high up when it's deployed like that. Maybe they were supposed to pull a ladder out of the hatch after them.

"How much do those windows weigh?"
"A couple ounces."
"............"
"The real ones?"
"Yeah."
"Five, maybe six hundred pounds."
"Do they need to be so big? Yeah, of course they do, otherwise they wouldn't be able to see the Moon from their seats."
Paraphrased from the HBO Miniseries, From the Earth, to the Moon. When Grumman were still designing the LEM.
Nice looks, but kinda heavy, it seems to me.

Chunks of it I can recall by memory.
Pretty incredible though, the lengths they had to go to to get the Spacecraft Mass down to the TLI limits of the Saturn V. Not as much as lasting far longer and doing far more than it was ever designed for on that Mission.

I think the astronauts were supposed to use a rope ladder to climb down, but tests proved that that was problematic compared to using a regular ladder.
Wish there was better photos of the 1962 lander mock-up Kennedy had behind him in one of his speeches. That 1962 Convair lander design looked interesting as well.
