Description
Originally drawn for an exhibition of my work at Chester Racecourse - one of my largest drawings to date and one that probably took me the longest as I drew every individual in crowd - mad? yes! Β especially as I blurred them out after i had finished as it didnt look right!!The third equine related drawing in the sries- here are the other two...
Β
Drawn with all my usual bits and pieces - Faber Castell 9000 series pencils on Bristol Board paper

The harsh reality is, these two horses, along with all racehorses, will end up being either shot on the track for breaking a leg or sent to slaughter when they aren't running fast enough to make money for their greedy owners. Can't wait for horse racing to be banned along with dog racing and all other forms of animal cruelty.
Other than the sadness this piece brings me thinking about the fates of these innocents, it is very well done in technique and lighting. Although I'm guessing the scanner took away detail in the upper right corner. Looks all faded there.

This is jaw dropping! The detail is astounding - I'm especially in awe that you took the time and had the patience to draw an entire crowd! Stunning work!Β Β Β

One persons patience is another person's stupidity took too much time on the crowd, should have used other techniques - but anyway, glad you liked it

I don't even know how I'd deal with that. Other than draw a small section, photocopy it a dozen times and cut and paste them on.Β Β

Thank you as always - yeah dont know what happened with the crowd? after drawing each individual person I decided to blur them out as it looked too artificial - wish I had known that before I drew them all

Thank you glad you think so - especially the fact that you felt that it was dynamic - movement can be difficult to capture in pencil, but was definitely my intention

This is absolutely extraordinary! As others have commented, the low angled perspective makes the piece very dynamic - I think it is also very impressive to achieve such perfect anatomical accuracy from such a challenging viewpoint. Well done. I find that sometimes busy backgrounds can detract from foreground subjects, but in this case, the crowd in the stands looks realistic without dominating the drawing. Leaving a large section of background (the sky) white was a very effective choice to center attention on the horses. I am particularly impressed by the detailed shading on the horses' muscles and lower legs. Breathtaking work!!!

Thanks for the great comment - I played around with lots of ideas for the background - clouds, the sun, all sorts, but i always find if you overcrowd a pencil drawing you can lost focus on the central figure - thus the reason it was left blank. Β I have done a lot of human figurative drawings before and understand muscle tones quiet well - never before in horses but used similar principle in capturing the anatomy of the horses

TomCatKid In reply to Paul-Shanghai [2016-11-22 02:35:08 +0000 UTC]
Yes, your decision to leave the background largely blank was very effective in keeping the viewer's focus on the action! I actually think a lot of very talented artists with excellent technical skill underestimate the distracting effect of a busy background (Robert Bateman, for example)... just because someone is *capable* of drawing something doesn't necessarily mean that doing so creates the best artistic outcome.Β
I can see how your skill in capturing human muscle tones could translate well to horses, especially because their fur is so smooth and the muscles are so clearly defined below the skin. As a former veterinarian, I can also appreciate the (not immediately obvious) similarities in musculoskeletal anatomy between animals and humans.Β
Anyway, you've done an outstanding job on this piece (and all the others in your gallery). I will be watching to see more of your work!
