there's a technique with biro, it's hard to explain. you have to have the pen at a bit of an angle like you can see in the picture, then you just make gentle strokes, and build it up like that. Only push down hard if you're doing a black area.

that is very cool. seems like it would take a lot of practice and patience to make sure it turns out just right. do you usually follow an undersketch and then work around that or is it all free hand with no guide?

i drew a fairly basic light outline in pencil and then did the rest free hand working from studies of a skull and rose (and later a carnation for the center) that I had already done previously in a sketchbook.

I thought it was paint at first but ball-point? that is simply amazing. I've always loved the contrast of skeletons with red flowers.

it's all done using black and red biro, although i did some faint marks with a light pencil to help map it out at the beginning, you can still see some of the marks where i had planned to do it differently, but I like to leave the marks rather than rub them out because it shows the process.
