Yep, I drew an outline in pencil first, this is a repeat pattern so you need to measure and sketch out everything first to get it just right. You can see some pencil lines in the undrawn areas if you look closely, these are a reminder of the fact that I had a different plan for the piece when I first sketched it out - the best work always comes from being flexible and changing your vision for the piece as you work into it.

How do you achieve that level of smoothness with the ballpoint pen? Is it water-smudged, or is the ink just very finely and lightly placed?

no water involved. just very delicately drawing with the pen at a sharp angle to the page. If you want to see me drawing just type Paul Alexander Thornton into youtube, i have plenty of videos.

I don't know... maybe you meant it to be like that. But, it looks like it needs to be rotated clockwise.

i disagree, which is why i kept it this way. It's a 'making of' photo of a drawing which is on a drawing board and therefore at an angle, also the photograph is coming from the side so the parts of the drawing that are further away are smaller... rotating the drawing CW could actually be counter productive as it could confuse the depth of field in the image. The original drawing is almost perfectly symmetrical and if you would prefer to see it head on then its best to look at one of the photos of the finished piece, if there isn't one in my gallery then there is one on the Stolenspace Gallery website

I know it says you used ballpoint pen. Ware the pens anything special? Or just everyday Run-of-the-mill ballpoints?

hey thanks a lot, i do appreciate the feedback your criticisms were fair too, its all a matter of opinion anyway right? yeah i love ballpoint pens i actually favour the fine Bic ballpoint pens but you can achieve similar levels of detail with most ballpoints

its fine how it is it was a conscious choice to have it at this angle, it has more depth this way its one of many photos of this piece some are not at an angle... this just proved to be most popular
