Story, colors, and lettering by me. Pencils and inks by my talented bud and collaborator Shawn Van Briesen .

This was a fun page.

Wait, I'm an idiot! I meant Vox 114 from the 2002 Time Machine movie. I mixed his name with a Big Finish DW character.

The last panel is genius.

I'm really enjoying this, the way you're using all those references to show just how *weird* her life was.

That's exactly it- I'm glad that's coming across and that it's not just seeming like a lot of quirky randomness.

Any clue as to when the next page is coming?

Hopefully soon. Shawn turned the next page in a good while back, and it's already lettered. I just need to find the time to color it once I get some paying work out of the way.

Excellent work.

Nice mention of Bullet Time.
I think the novel writers had a pre-occupation with killing off former companions. Dodo, Liz, Sarah.
At least Happy Endings regenerated the Brigadier.

I wasn't thinking Time Lord art. Just modern art, really. My daughter and I just come back from the Rembrandt exhibit at the Art Institute.

Seriously, third panel, in the room that is not with the TARDIS, I swear that looks like some time lord imagery. Left of "You Made Me" painting.

Dirk Gently
John Cleese
Mona Lisa
TARDIS in a museum
You've been watching way too much Douglas Adams.

Just CITY OF DEATH, really. I like Adams, but not as much as some people. I've actually gotta admit I've never read the DIRK GENTLY books. Chronotis and the Hitchhiker's Guide cameo was something Shawn came up with.

Ah yes, the infamous Bullet Time. I give credit where it's due; RTD did at least fix THAT.

Nice City of Death reference.

PaulHanley In reply to Arcalian [2012-09-06 15:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. And yeah, I know many people have written off Bullet Time as having been undone even back in the EDAs, but just to leave it as "well maybe that means Sarah Jane isn't dead anymore" is pretty freakin' lame. That's right up there w/ leaving Benton unconscious and possibly dead the last time we see him in THE ANDROID INVASION.

Also overturned by RTD- Liz Shaw in Eternity Weeps.

I always chalk this stuff up to "Time War" or any other bigass history-altering reboot (like the end of Moff's first season). Nothing is REALLY final in Doctor Who. I'm sure one day the Time Lords are gonna be back- it's just too big a thing not to use. It'd be like leaving Magneto dead in X-MEN (personally, I'd take them right back to their roots- slightly scary super-beings who are basically well-meaning but, due to ideological differences, are forever pursuing the Doctor to stop his too-overt interfering- just like the 60s).

I'm always surprised by how the production team neglects the spinoff media in ways other series don't. Say what ya will about Star Wars (and oy vey, there's a lot to say)- but damn near EVERYTHING counts with them (no matter how dopey). It's weird when they do stuff like the Doctor bumping into Churchill, and even saying they have previous history, but then when they lay out that history in The Brilliant Book, they totally ignore PLAYERS, THE SHADOW IN THE GLASS, etc- all BBC books, no less. It's kind of an FU to the fans who bought those books (which the BBC licensed or even published itself).

Arcalian In reply to PaulHanley [2012-09-06 15:44:36 +0000 UTC]

It's the curse of the EU, Expanded Universe. I heard someone on a star wars forum say that Lucas himself thinks that *none* of the post-ROTJ stuff counts, as that was supposed to be the end of the Sith and the end of the Story. And let's not get started on how the current Clone Wars cartoon overrules stuff that happened in Tarkovsky's cartoon. And then there's Cyborg Maul....

Bottom line? The powers-that-be in *any* franchise don't really care about the EU stuff. It's all about money.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaulHanley In reply to Arcalian [2012-09-07 00:52:39 +0000 UTC]

Amen to that, brutha. Didn't know those finer points of the Star Wars EU (except for cyborg Maul), but that all sounds about right. I actually haven't kept up with it since the HEIR TO THE EMPIRE days, but I recently had to do a crash course in it b/c I applied for a job at BioWare on the OLD REPUBLIC writing staff (hey, like ya said- it's all about the money ). I didn't talk about it around here of course, but this was pretty much what my life was centered around last December/ January. The process got pretty far along (I wrote a test module and everything) before the post got pulled, followed a few months later by BioWare axing about a quarter of its staff (including a buddy who was already on the writing team).

We never reached the point, but I always wondered what I was gonna say if someone had asked me, "So... do you actually like Star Wars?" That wouldn't have been an easy answer. I guess I would've been honest and hoped for the best.

City Of Death, Who Killed Kennedy?, Bullet Time, The Sarah Jane Adventures...I'm seriously impressed at how you are tying it all together

Should I know who the other two people in the final panel are?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaulHanley In reply to DoctorRy [2012-09-06 12:31:47 +0000 UTC]

The two folks at the bottom are con artists Mickey Bricks and Stacie Monroe from the (really great) BBC series HUSTLE [link] (TV_series) More than a few eps involved art-themed cons, so they're a logical cameo for London's Tate Museum of Modern Art (where this is all going down). Presumably Cleese is a new "mark".

HUSTLE had a lot of Who actors turn up in it over the years, including Colin Baker and John Barrowman. Plus two of the leads were Marc Warren (Elton from LOVE AND MONSTERS) and Robert Glenister (Salateen from THA CAVES OF ANDROZANI).

It also had one of the catchiest "I can't get this damn music out of my head" opening themes ever: [link]

Robert Vaughn! Definitely going to have to look now
