I wish they would cast Euron in the new season! He is such a badass character :3

Yeah, he's an interesting new character and a seemingly genuine threat to Daenerys & her dragons.Β
But if they are holding-off on introducing him in the show, then I understand since so little material has so far been written on him.

Hopefully the new book will come out soon so the show can have something to work off of. Unfortunately, the show rips through the books at a very fast pace.

Also, while I appreciate that GRRM has addressed the characters in the Iron Islands and Dorn and enjoy a glimpse at the rest of the world, I don't necessarily see a use or need for them in the bigger story yet.
I trust the author but hope he's going somewhere soon with those plot lines and they don't turn out to be unnecessary padding.

I Absolutely love the show but they did indeed go through the books way to fast.Β It would have been amazing if they had just decided to make the seasons a bit longer, but i guess that is out of the question.
(There are some characters that did not appear on the show that i would have liked to see D: too bad i guess..)

Do you have a character that you really like to see or should already have been on the show but didn't yet?

It's amazing how you get a taste of the different cultures, love that. But maybe there are big plans to show of Dorn a bit more?

I'd like to see Strong Belwas, he was an entertaining goof.
Unfortunately,Β the Champions Battle scene (outside of Meereen) that he should have been in, had Daario as Daenery's selected fighter instead.
If there's no Belwas then who eats the honeyed locusts?!

Also, I'd like for "Yara" Greyjoy to leave the show and replace her with Asha Greyjoy from the books.
The actress theyΒ castΒ to play Yara and the way the character is written (for the show) is one of my few problems with the HBO series.

Regarding seeing a bigger picture of the world, I'm hoping to see what's going on with the other surviving Valyrians that are briefly hinted at in the books.

I have to say that Euron is kind of written like a video game boss character.

Although as far as dialogue goes, he's nothing like the exposition-rich 10 minute monologuing villains in many japanese video games.

He poses an interesting new threat to Daenerys and I'm looking forward to seeing who the show casts and how he is utilized in the next book!

There are so many talented actors who can do the role of Euron Greyjoy and Victarion Greyjoy justice. I just hope that HBO casts the correct person. They haven't let me down so far. I can't fault any of the choices yet. A little nit picking here and there but generally I'm pleased with their decisions so far. However the more further we get into the series the more pressure on them to cast correctly. I heard that the Mountain and Daario Naharis have been recast. We can't have any more of that further on.

I have to agree. They are near perfection in casting the show.

My only issue w/it concerns the unremarkable actress portraying Theon's sister Asha.

Thanks for the news on the re-casting of The Mountain.

The new actor definitely fits the look and size of the written character better.Β

Since the part is basically a physical presence that doesn't require much acting, I can happily get behind that decision.

Hax09 In reply to PaulPhillips [2014-02-02 16:58:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I think they probably needed the right Mountain for his role in the trial by combat. In the past he hasn't been as central. Only a presence in Harrenhall.
The second mountain in season 2 looked slighting thin. Tall, but not enough muscle. I'm glad they cast him again.

Hey Paul, well done on all of them, however Euron's eye patch is on his left eye, not right.

Oh, Euron's patch... that's totally intentional.

wasnt the ghost of high heart a child of a forest too? Or I misundertood it?

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

PaulPhillips In reply to Friggo-Glicker [2013-05-25 14:36:12 +0000 UTC]

No, she was an old dwarf woman with red eyes (the gift of second sight).
GRRM marks people with this special gift by having red or green eyes (like the Ghost of HH, Bloodraven, Jojen Reed and maybe also Euron Greyjoy with one "special eye" under the eye patch).

I'm not sure why Bran isn't described as having this physical trait since he seems of that ilk.

Not sure how far you are in your reading (so sorry for any potential spoilers)...
The children of the forest are a different species than humans.
While they are small and very old, they don't show age and have nut brown skin and golden eyes with slits in them (like some cats).
Apparently they can now only be found beyond the wall in the north.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

Friggo-Glicker In reply to PaulPhillips [2013-05-25 22:04:48 +0000 UTC]

I already reed all of them...at least the 5 that ae already written. I know that about the children of the forest, they are elf-like creatures, but still... I always thought the Ghost of High Heart was implicited an old child of teh forest; they can live much more than humans; that doesn't mean they don't age; maybe they just age slower than us... but again, is just especulation

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

PaulPhillips In reply to Friggo-Glicker [2013-05-26 16:55:15 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you're right. It's hard to say.

But she was described as very old looking with none of the elfin features (besides height) attributed to the COTF. And she was a little randy as well (...doesn't she demand a sloppy kiss from one of the men in Lord Beric's group as partial price for her talents?) That seemed a little out of character from the solemn COTF Bran meets.
She did describes herself as over a thousand years old to Beric's men, but I took that for playful exaggeration of her age. And again, the red eyes instead of large golden slitted eyes again suggests to me that she is an old human dwarf with the gift.

Another possibility: Maybe she's half human/half COTF.
I'm not sure if GRRM specifically indicates where the "second sight" abilities in men come from.
Either way, it seems certain that more info about the COTF's origins/motives should find it's way into the next book(s).

If you haven't already, I recommend reading the tales of Dunk & Egg.
A few short stories written by GRRM that take place about 80 years before the events in the first book of the ASOIAF series.
They were originally published in 3 separate anthologies but with all the attention now being paid to the series, I wouldn't be surprised if they're now collected in one volume somewhere.

Aw man, Reznak looks EXACTLY like the preening snake of a vizier he is.
Tormund looks to me like Robert must have when he was still hale and strong; the kind of man's man that leads from the front and whom men like to follow.
Oberyn's expression looks... a bit too cold and hard, I think.
Selyse looks like a perfect "important only in her own eyes" noble lady.
Grey Worm has a very honest face.

Overall, I like.

PaulPhillips In reply to Bek359 [2012-12-01 20:14:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks alot!
It's definitely a challenge to not only design/draw the characters but imbue them with character as well.

Oberyn's dark expression was because I imagined him thinking of his dead sister and revenge, which seemed like his defining character trait to me at the time.

Yeah, I feel Tormund could use some more work. He feels a little too "generic barbarian" to me.
BTW, I think the actor Brian Blessed would make a perfect Tormund in the tv series (I should have just drawn him!).

On the whole I'm happy with the drawings but there are a few character revisions I might make someday ...like making the Kindly Man's expression a little warmer/inviting, Missandei seems a little older than she should be and Janos Slynt should probably be a little stouter and pompous-looking.

Bek359 In reply to PaulPhillips [2012-12-02 02:35:00 +0000 UTC]

Re: Oberyn - Yeah, that's probably what he's like on the inside, but he's probably learned to keep that part below the surface when dealing with his "allies" the Lannisters. That's what I thought, anyway.

Thanks again, I appreciate the inclusion!

FYI: I also have another batch of 25 ASOIAF character sketches, but many of those drawings are a bit rough.
If your'e interested in any of them, just let me know and I can crop the characters and erase-out any surrounding pencil lines.
