Description Oil painting, on Canvas 30 x 36 inches. Rumspringa is the period when Amish adolescents leave their community to explore the world outside. The image was based on an I Pod add. I like to screw around with meaning.

Rumspringa isn't a thing anymore XD They don't do it anymore, infact it's almost extinct since the younger generation always have cars and cell phones.

I first heard the term on a "Bones" crime drama series. Constance "Bones" Brennan, forensic anthropologist, and Sealey Booth,FBI man and former sniper, investigate the murder of a boy on Rumspringa, whose remains were strewn along a railroad track (gruesome murders and grotesque mangling of bodies is a typical opening of any episode.) They have difficulty discussing matters with the boy's parents.

Love this! So funny but a little more deep than that, too.

Great concept & execution. I saw a documentary called "Devil's Playground" on the very subject, & was extremely intrigued by the idea of a culture that shapes someone from childhood suddenly giving the children a decision to make, whether to continue tradition or leave the flock.

I just love this piece.
I don't know if you know just how perfectly this expresses rumspringa. Especially since the girl is still wearing the old order dress and bonnet which most girls tend to wear even during rumspringa. When I look at her I feel that she is riding the edge of both of her worlds. Coming from a ... familiar background I can really relate and I find it just beautiful.

Looking back over the comments, I realise I've never bothered to mention just how much I love this piece. I favourited it ages ago, and on random favourites every now and again it comes up on my own userpage... and it always makes me smile. Beautiful concept, beautifully executed.

Congrats on the upcoming marriage. I have been married 14 years, and I can say that I love my wife more and more every day as well, despite some rough times in the past.

Thanks. International marriage is not as easy as it looks! But I remain optimistic.
And as for the journal feature - well, y'know, I don't have millions of pageviews, but occasionally I like to share something wonderful with the hardcore few who visit me!

As a new painter I find it difficult to truely capture skintones and facial expressions. I admire your gallery, but this one is by far my favorite of the bunch. Kudos on the DD.

You can really draw. That is the basis for any figurative work. Nice stuff. As far as colour. I use grayed down orange for the light tones, and burnt umber, grayed down for the shadow. I have a bunch of colour charts that I made, and I take a sample from whatever skin tones I like in paintings. Look for paintings that have the skin tone you want and mix up those skin tones. Don't settle for anything else. If the colour doesn't match what you want- don't settle for the next best colour. Remember, people, at least the caucasian types, are not pink, as we have been led to believe.

I just checked out Phil Hale. I was not familiar with his work. I guess that it is the chiarascuro style, high contrast. But Phil stole it from Caravaggio, who probably stole it from someone. Everyone is a thief, artists are the best thieves. Glad you like it.

This is excellent It really made me grin.

I immediately puzzled over the rocking out Amish girl when I opened this, but your description explains the method to the madness. I've always wondered how Amish teenagers react when finally out in the modern world. This piece gives me a little inside view!

Your ability to work with oils still stuns me, but it's really the pose and her expression that stands out here. So emotive and frankly hilarious You've captured it beautifully. Definitely a from me.

Oh, that is so nice. I met an Amish guy, who during his teenage years, managed to travel quite far. Even as far as Belize, and the Yucatan, Mexico. There is a large Mennonite population there. I actually just sold this piece through a gallery, but for a ridiculously low price-- $900.00Canadian.

thanks, I'm glad that you find it amusing. I find it amusing to see the Amish teenagers with their buggies going as fast as they can, eating a bag of potato chips and wearing sun glasses. Their so cool!
