Description A little historical background: This picture was taken in 1916 during the Battle of The Somme in WW1. This is the famous Hawthorn ridge mine being detonated by the British.

Just one question, pictures like these are considered public domain, right?

No, not at all.
Resemblance to Mosquito Hunting skit:
1.massive explosion
2.massive explosion for the sake of a single mosquito
3 massive overkill
Resemblance to "How not to be seen"

Unless someone has renewed the copyright on it, it should be public domain.

You shouldn't discount mosquitos. They're rather hearty creatures. It's said they'll survive in a neuclear war.

paxtofettel In reply to quamp [2010-10-21 10:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Now who would renew the copyright on an old WW1 picture?

quamp In reply to paxtofettel [2010-10-21 14:36:59 +0000 UTC]

Anyone who thinks they can make money off of it.

paxtofettel In reply to quamp [2010-10-21 19:34:05 +0000 UTC]

But this picture is from freakin 1916, and its a war photo. Aren't these things taken for educational purposes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

quamp In reply to paxtofettel [2010-10-22 05:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but it's really a matter of greed.
Even though the photographer is probably long since dead, if there's someone who can get control of a copyright, they'll exploit it no end.
