Description I'm a little, well, a big bit nervous about posting this

Some of my lovely dA friends have asked how I draw unblended skin. I also get asked a lot about the different papers I use, so with a little nudge from I've put together a little tutorial type thing to cover them both. Christina sweetie, this is for you

I hope it's helpful to some of you
Paula

P.S. I ran out of space on my tutorial, but just to say these scans are pretty close up so you can see whats going on. To see the skin unblended in a drawing, I used this method in these drawings -

So many thanks for this, very useful indeed. The very light layering to start is something that's passed me by, I'll try that with my next drawing. Great stuff and more please!

Your tutorial is very useful. It is a amazing technique but it is so hard to draw this. I have a question: what the best paper to draw with this technique?

pbird12 In reply to DarthJudicare [2012-06-01 08:52:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad it was helpful

It gets a lot easier with practice I promise I use it on different paper, but I like it best on extra smooth bristol board, I prefer the texture it produces on a plate surface paper

Thank you so much for your advice, I'm going try to find this paper, me too, I prefer to draw on plate surface.

HoshisamaValmor [2012-04-29 20:18:36 +0000 UTC]

well this is quite impressive. Skin and hair are always impressive to me, but unblended skin is quite the thing on itself. Is it really just drawing circle after circle? They should be quite small circles, right?
I'm sorry I'm spamming you around, but I do miss drawing with pencils, but every time I just think or returning to them, I get horrible results, so I keep trying to see aways I can mix and adapt into pen drawing.

pbird12 In reply to HoshisamaValmor [2012-04-29 20:32:37 +0000 UTC]

It is just lots and lots of little circles, the only trick is to get the pressure of the pencils right, but once you've been doing it for a while, you just know what feels right or not The circles are pretty small. I'll be doing the drawing in the video unblended if it would help to see how it works. It looks very ugly for a while and then it starts to come together after a few layers of graphite

Don't worry, I'm happy to answer if I can. I know exactly how you feel, before I joined dA I hadn't lifted a pencil in 10 years and was never able to draw people. It comes eventually, especially if you love it like you obviously do.

If your able to draw in biro like you do, graphite will be a breeze!

thank you kindly for all your answers and let me tell you, graphite sounds a lot more threatning than biro from where I'm standing
