Description
Woah, I drew something non-furry! You can all thank ~StarDragonBlue for this.Have mercy.
Nothing to see under that scrap of fabric she's wearing. Insects don't have... Well, anything there. I put the fabric there for the aesthetics and while coloring, tested a technique for patterned cloth. Oh, and that's jewelry on her neck, metal rings.
Huge thank-you to ~nosredna1313 for tweaking the scan for me!
The tree boughs in the backdrop are crap. =/ You don't have to tell me. Tried something new there that I won't be trying again. The backdrop sky got all grained-up in the scan, too.
Sakura Pigma Micron, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, Prismacolor markers.

"Tiara" is such a pretty name for this species. I like that! Thanks!

Wow, pretty darn good for a 1st. The expression on her face as well as her pose feels natural. I like the idea of clothing for asthetics sake, and how she has jewlery as well XD Wonder what king of stone it is. She also looks kinda adorable, I'd want to hug her if she wasn't so...y'know, spiny ^^!

I think she looks beautiful.
There are not enough insect anthros out there and you did a great job
I kept some E.T.s as pets too and I think about getting a bunch of them again.
The yellow glow you used on her edges and background is beautiful.

Thanks so much for the in-depth comment and the fav! This piece is fairly old now, but I still like it because it was such a challenge to draw this creature. I want to draw another E.T. some time with my current skills.

I love this pic. The background is awesome, the character has an awesome design. I love the rings on her neck as well, adds a bit of interest to the design. And the idea is one that is never thought of often. Hats off to you!
Makes me wish I had the patience to learn to draw....
BTW, does a scorpion anthro sound like a weird idea?

Wow, thank you so much. This was incredibly hard for me, as I'm used to doing fluffy kitty anthros and whatnot. But I honestly do love arthropods.

I looooove this so much. That's why I faved it. And I waited to leave a long comment about how much I adore it. Sheesh.
Girl, your colors are so vibrant and go together so well! I'm always struggling to make my colors make sense. But this is just gorgeous. That lovely golden sky, those lovely plants, the way the gold "bleeds in" to the mantis... she seems to glow
The intricacy of the armor, and the clothes, and that bright lovely eye... she has a lot of presence, that's all. Beautiful.
Wish I could say more. I'll just leave it at the fave

Thanks so much, Starrie. Both for the wonderful, encouraging comment and the awesome critter suggestion. I would never have challenged myself to draw an insect anthro if you hadn't done that.
Admittedly, I went a little nuts with the Deco Yellow. Will you believe me when I say I kill two or three Deco Yellow markers a year? Individual markers usually last me two to three years. I'm a Deco Yellow junkie...

Oh, I believe you kill the yellow. (YOU MONSTER!) Yellow is your bg almost all the time But at the same time, I know why... it adds a lot to your composition.
Or maybe you're just addicted.
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem

great job on this, it looks really lovely! I especially like the accessories...the beads look possitively glowing, you've really gottten that down~ But I must say, the thing that I find really gorgeous about this piece is that cloth! Its perfect! I find it so hard to draw fabric with a design on it without making it a distraction or making it look like it isn't part of the cloth, but you blended it perfectly, and it looks just like cloth! So truly, well done!

Peachfuzz In reply to CrazySkye [2007-12-04 03:57:14 +0000 UTC]
Wow, thanks so much, Skye. That's one of the best comments I've gotten in quite a while!
I made the cloth pattern a little more natural by using colored pen that fudges slightly with the marker ink, and putting it on before I colored with the markers. So, the marker ink made the lines softer and more natural, swallowing it in the darks and showing it on the brights just like a real cloth pattern. Normally I'd add the colored ink on top of the marker to keep it sharp, but for this, it's better under. They're Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, in case you're interested. Great pens. Not good for outlines on certain papers because they'll fudge a little with the marker ink, but they're awesome for details and things.

Pose, expression, color, shading...this came out excellent! Since she's anthro I don't thing the absence of a pair of limbs makes any difference. For that matter, my anthro insects only have four as well (OMG a hint)

Kidding. I'd love to see a buggie anthro from you! Like camels (and nearly all of the animal species on earth), bugs just don't get enough love in the anthro loop.

Great job on your first insect anthro! She looks great, not too bad. I would've gone with six limbs though, but that's me.
My brother used to have a mantis once, she was pretty and sometimes I see mantisi around my school campus. Those kinds of spiny stick insects I've seen mostly on tv and in insect exhibits at zoos, but I've never seen them as pets or sold in store. Maybe it's where I've lived,I know CA doesn't allow certain animals (like sugar gliders and ferrets) to be kept as pets, but I don't know if it extends to certain insects.
