Description For my trade with . This is her wolf character, Lusiada. Check out her gallery for some really fantastic animal and anthro artwork!

My very first wolf. And only my second canine anthro ever. I really struggled to get her to look like a wolf and not a deformed long-muzzled cat. Not sure I succeeded. I also had a heck of a time with the lighting. I really like the backdrop, I'm just not sure that the shading I did on the character jives with it. My first night scene in a very long time, so it was a real experiment.

Hope I didn't kill poor Lusiada too badly, FalcΓ£o!

love the pose and the attention to detail in the background. Night scenes are hard, it's difficult to make it look dark without loosing all of the vivid colors. you did a good job there.

Her head seems a bit too large though.

easy mystake to make, especially when it's your first attempt at drawing a long muzzled animal. I think it's just the extra mass of the maw that makes the head look oversized, if that makes any sence. ^_^'

A lovely work Peachfuzz. I really LOVE the foliage on the trees. They look fluffy (in a pine tree way, not in a fur texture way) and they have real depth to them. Having the trunks stick out at crazyt angles is just so cool.
It may just be my monitor (which is screwing up a fair deal lately) or the way it was scanned/ saved, but this picture seems to have few really rich dark tones, that I'd expect in a night scene. If someone else mentioned this already, I'm sorry.
That aside, the colours rock and I didn't see a problem with the shading. It looked great to me.

Don't ever spare a critique just because someone else might have said it. Recurring critiques are actually the best indicator of what I need to work on!

I shaded black into the darkest browns. Not sure what else I can do to darken it, except use more...

Thanks so much for the awesome comment. I always appreciate it.

I think you did a great job doing a wolf character, she looks wolf like! I also love the shading you did on it, although I do see your point, the shading of the chara doesn't quite go well with the shading of the background. I think the chara's shading goes really well with the moon, but maybe you need some more shading on the trees to make them fit better...although I do love how you did them! And the moon is spectacular!

well, at least you do lighting! I don't really ever pay attention to that sorta stuff...>,>

WarpedOrbit [2007-02-11 20:33:55 +0000 UTC]

Well you succeeded with the wolfiness; she doesn't look at all like a cat. The thing about moonlight is that it mutes color and adds an eerie pale glow unlike the golden shine of sunlight. The lighting is not exactly accurate here, (this is the woods, a natural setting where there wouldn't be extra light from streetlamps etc.) but I seldom do 'accurate' moonlight myself...I like showing color, even in what's supposed to be night. There is a time around dusk when colors would look like this. I'd probably add a touch of white in the highlights, but it's beautiful as it is. I think the 'big head' is okay because it gives her a chibi-cuteness. The pose and the background are great

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Peachfuzz In reply to WarpedOrbit [2007-02-11 20:36:26 +0000 UTC]

So, it would have been more accurate to have paler colors? Like greyscale, almost? I really need to get outside one moonlit night and take a look around.

Thanks for the helpful input, I always appreciate it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WarpedOrbit In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-02-12 00:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Lighting can be tricky; it depends on how many light sources there are. In the deep woods at night it should only be the moon, but in places near large human habitations there can be surprisingly more light. When I look at this picture It makes me think maybe there's a large town somewhere in the forground that we can't see, and she's warily sneaking towards it.

Whoa! You've totally got me in awe with this picture! Just the detail and amazing shading using the greys and blues with the actual colors of things to make the night lighting effect is.... wow! I especially love the trees! The water there almost looks real... and her fur has this really nice texture to it that looks like it was done with just different colors overlapping!? Hmmm I think it goes quite well with the background... maybe a little more dark shades with the arm she is leaning on, torso, and a little on the side of the face that is away from the moonlight might give her a little more impact like her leg/foot seems to have, but I dunno! It's probably just because it's a yellowish sort of color in the areas I mentioned... I have no clue how you'd shade that for a night scene! So I say you did good
This is one of your first wolves?! Whoa!
Only thing I'd say is her overall head looks a little big for the body, could be her angle since you don't see much of her neck but right now with the scruffs of fur on her cheek it looks like her head is as wide as her shoulders. ^_^ But I still like it... You're so good at coloring and drawing!! Amazing work, must fav this one!

O_O Yikes that was long! Sorry

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Peachfuzz In reply to Foxxeh [2007-02-11 17:30:10 +0000 UTC]

Woah, I totally didn't notice that. Her head is ginormous! Guess I went overboard with the wolven cheek fluff there. Her neck doesn't show much because her head is angled forward, covering it, but that doesn't excuse the excessive size of the head. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be more careful next time!

I had trouble shading the fur. The character's feet, ears, and hands are a dark black-brown, and the rest is a lighter brown. So I had problems figuring out what to do to make the darker fur lighter in the light, and the lighter fur darker in the dark, without confusing her fur colors! I still have a lot to learn about shading and lighting.

Thanks so much for the detailed input, I really appreciate it! Never worry about a comment being to long. The long ones with lots of input are the ones that help the most.

Peachfuzz In reply to amaguard [2007-02-10 22:30:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Amaguard. I think I went wrong on the shading because her light parts are too light, and the rest of her is too dark... Or something. I'm going to have to go outside one moonlit night and look around at what the light does to items.

Peachfuzz In reply to Sambev [2007-02-10 22:27:18 +0000 UTC]

Harhar, double post.

I agree, the outlining on the moon looks bad. I don't think I could have gotten away without an outline, but I should have done it in colored ink. Would a light gray have been good? Or another color?

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. I don't know what type of fur is on her spear, but it probably belonged to someone who was foolish enough to try and harm the last natural treasures of Portugal, which Lusiada guards.
