Description Don't think I can swing this big axe? Which body part would you like to bet on that?

My part of an art trade with .

Okay, I suck at weapons. T__T And multi-colored fur. Metal confuses the heck out of me and so does changing fur colors. I really hate the way her fur came out. It looks really globby and dumb to me. Maybe I should have stuck with ultra smooth like normal... Oh, the axe handle is so dark because it's ironwood. >D And the designs on it aren't shiny because they're supposed to be carved into the blade, so they're unpolished. Still looks bad, I know. But that's what I was going for.

I like the backdrop, though. I had a blast with the bottlebrush trees! The little grassies look kinda cheap, but better than the ground did without them. There needed to be green there. And though I'm still angry with how the character came out, I'd mess it up all over again just to have the joy of coloring her hair! I the hair! It was hard to make it wavy like that and I had a ton of fun using the calico colors there. I stupidly colored over the shine on the front lock, but hey, I like it.

Well, I hope you like it, ~Shadowpelt ! Not my best work but I really did try. Not a single brown marker used, interestingly.

Materials: Sakura Pigma Micron, Prismacolor markers, 8.5 by 11 inch smooth bristol.

Well you're always your own worst critic... You're also a cut or two above me, so I don't really have too much constructive criticism because I couldn't do anything anywhere CLOSE to this. Oooh, I love her eyes.

You're the best! Thank you for taking the time to show me these things. It really helps! I'm SO coming back to these examples the next time I try engraving or multi-colored fur.

Once again, thanks so much. I'm really thankful.

Oh, I can show you how to do fur like that; there's a simple 'formula'. And the metal engraving looks flat because there should be a little depth to it.

Gah! I haven't talked to you for far too long! D: Well, this seems like a great place to pick things up again.

The drawing looks great in itself. The anatomy is all spot on, the pose is interesting, realistic, and natural, mostly, (though since critique is welcome I feel compelled to say that her left arm is perhaps a bit too far to the side- when lifting a heavy weight like that, it'd be more natural to hold it a bit more to the front than the side, as it matches the natural bend of the arm a bit better) and other than the one thing the pose feels very natural and looks very much like a pose one could comfortably be in.

Also, the picture is very well laid out, having a good balance of interest spread evenly throughout the picture, making it very pleasing to the eye.

But, the real defining point of this picture is the colouring, which is absolutely wonderful. The hair, as you mentioned, came out great! You can almost feel the life and bounce wavy hair like that would have The fur looks good to me, it has a nice shine to it, and the transitions look fine. And I have NO idea what you're going on about with the metal, I personally thought the axe looked awesome!

Great background as well. The way it's laid out really draws your attention to the character, everything seems to be pointing right at her! The colours are vibrant, especially that sunset-esque gradient in the background.

And lastly, I love the eyes They're very bright and lively. It's the colouring, I think.

All in all this is a really great piece, I think. Nicely done. <^^>

Always after me lucky arms!

Nah, you're right. Does look weird. Though, I meant for the end of the axe handle to be resting on the ground rather than her holding it completely up. Maybe it'd show better if I'd bothered to added any shadows. It does appear to be held up solely by her arm, which in turn appears to be at an incorrect angle for holding the weight. I hadn't thought about that.

Thanks for the input. It makes me happy when people point out when things look weird to them and say why. It's really helpful because I don't see these little things on my own. I don't mind at all when you point such things out in my art because you're really good at explaining the problems you see. And that's what helps me the most.

WilliamRichard In reply to Peachfuzz [2006-09-02 07:13:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you know, when you look at it that way, the arm makes a bit more sense, yes. Actually, what the best way, I think, to show that it's resting on the ground, would be to have the ground terminate the handle instead of the other way around like you've got here... you know, make it look like the very end is actually a little under the ground? Earth is kind of soft and would be displaced by the heavy axe, pushing the end slightly underground. Combine that with a bit of shading and it should get the look across perfectly... I think. Just thought I'd toss that out there...

No brown markers used? *scratches head* But then, how did you do the bit with the thingy... never mind, it boggles the mind. Brown without brown... too confusing for this Donna.
I don't see a problem with the axe, though. My favourite bit is the BEAUTIFUL lighting however. That glorious yellow backdrop framed by the flowers is just gorgeous. I love it. You should be proud of this piece mate.

Peachfuzz In reply to donnaquinn [2006-08-29 22:59:40 +0000 UTC]

That's right, no brown! I've been studying a bit of "color chemistry". It involves "implying" a color but not actually using it. Similar to how Warm Gray takes on the appearance of being lavendar when used with yellow, french gray takes on the appearance of being brown. I did use a bit of Sepia (Which I guess could be a brown), but the "brown" in the piece is all either a value of French Gray or a type of yellow, often mixed. The ground is Yellow Ochre and French Gray 40%!

Thank you for the great comment. I love yellow because it's so bright and luminous. You're one of the only other people I've met who uses color as brightly and thickly as I do!

Now I need to figure out what Cool Gray does with yellow. Could be ugly, though. Cool Gray and a warm tone like yellow? Maybe the gray will seem green or blue?

I know what you mean about how difficult it is to do the different colored fur thing. It's hard! But you did a nice job with it and the shading on the fur. Love the background too!
