theo couldn't remember much of his mother. from time to time he would dream about a woman's gentle caress and a soft, warm smile, but any other memory of her was non-existent; he couldn't even remember her face. a selfish bitch was what his father, the head of the plantation, sikes would call her, and the little toddler soon learned that he could never bring up the mention of his mom without getting slapped red across the cheek.

it hurt and made him tear up, and only encouraged sikes to strike him another time, so he eventually pressed the topic on no further.

"a weak sissy like you will never survive in this world" was what he was often told, and according to his dad, it was up to him to beat his cowardice into strength. sometimes the other plantation workers would hear a pleading cry for help coming from the back of their bunk rooms, but all of them knew far too well what consequences would come if they were to interfere. in the end, the workers merely closed an eye and continued on with their work, ignoring theo's wails; it will be good for him, they try to convince themselves.

it was later around this age that theo began to pick up sikes' fondness for aggression. just like his dad, he started to display his own form of violence, attacking other young workers with the excuse of "he was looking at my bruise funny", and sikes was proud; theo was starting to act like him.

despite his violent outbursts, there was one person who still took the effort to befriend him, a fellow worker named ian. they were around the same age, perhaps with ian being a little older, and along the years they began to grow close. soon, they sparked a mutual affection. it became a secret known only to both of them; they disguised their love with just being each other's casual relief, but sikes was quick to catch on. he noticed how they locked eyes, saw the little red tint on their cheeks, and immediately he decided: ian had to go. love was a sign of weakness, sikes strongly believed in that. and his son? in love? that was an insult to his very blood.

on the day he convinced their ez'mer master to trade ian away, he punished theo with a series of beatings that left a number of deep scars on his back, but that wasn't nearly as painful as finding out ian had left without a trace.

even after ian's disappearance, theo had to continue on with his life in the plantation. he grew more isolated and distanced himself from the other workers, and their only bonding time was when a fight broke out and theo was involved. recently though, whenever their ez'mer master came to visit, he would bring along his pet, a little boy called fe'nya, and theo would be put in charge of watching the boy while sikes and the ez'mer talked about the plantation and its condition. needless to say, despite not being able to see him all the time, theo grew fond of fe'nya.

a little while after that, a young teen called feng was transferred into the plantation. he was full of life, innocent and excitable, and always had the tendency to run out of the plantation whenever he had the chance to. it was later on that theo found out not just feng, but fe'nya as well, had made a friend called kurt who worked in a nearby mine, and soon all of them became close. it was thanks to the three boys that theo eventually improved his temperament; they were both younger than him, and it soon led him to have an instinct to protect them whenever they needed help. feng normally got in trouble the most; he would be picked on by the other workers, and theo would rush in to shoo them off.

two years passed by quickly, and while the four boys were good friends, one day kurt suddenly disappeared. theo didn't know if something bad happened to him, but he wasn't able to investigate it further, because it was during this time that feng began to act more distant towards him. theo thought to himself, "maybe he just wants time alone". he trusted the boy to tell him if anything was bothering him, and since feng hasn't told him anything, theo thought he'd respect his actions and let him do whatever he wanted. unfortunately, due to the lack of communication between the two, a fallout soon happened.

it had all been a major misunderstanding, but it happened too fast, and in the spur of the moment, theo was pressured into breaking off their friendship. during the fight he had thought it was the greatest idea in the world, but that was not the case after a few days; he could never stay mad at feng for long, and he realized it was him that was in the wrong, so he was ready to at least come clean with feng and at least apologize for his actions. however, just like ian, feng had suddenly disappeared. this time instead of mourning solemnly like he did in the past, he stormed straight to sikes and confronted him, demanding to know where feng went. as just as he feared, feng had been traded away.

next thing everyone knew, sikes was arrested. it turned out that he and a few others had been charged for illegal sugar trafficking, and they've been smuggling sugar around for at least a good five years. all of them, including sikes, were sent away for their punishment, and the entire plantation soon turned to chaos. their ez'mer master was condemned by the others for not controlling his humans well, and it soon concluded with him having to shut the plantation to a temporary close down and trade his slaves away for new ones.

theo had lived in the same plantation his whole life, so suddenly being transferred over to North Dakota was something that unnerved even him. even their master's favourite pet fe'nya was traded as well, and theo was lucky to have him in the same batch. however, he easily settled down just fine in the new plantation, and with no sikes around to watch him like a hawk, he finally felt less suffocated. as he was given much more freedom to roam about now, he began exploring the area nearby his plantation. within days of tunnel exploring, he bumped into a particular someone he never thought he'd meet again; feng. his encounter with his old friend was unexpected and, needless to say, they were both in very awkward terms. they soon, however, made up and, together with fe'nya, became fairly close again; close enough for feng to tell them about la colombe.

when theo heard of the ship and their goals, he wanted in immediately. he even decided to get a job position in the ship: a fighter pilot. he didn't mind helping and supporting the crew if they needed the manpower, and the fighter pilot position suited him the most out of all the others. two mentors called ko and shic took him under his wing, and soon began to train theo on various aspects of fighting and shooting. training was tough of course, and while he had little trouble with ko, he and shic weren't a very compatible match; shic only took him in for his potential and because ko convinced him to. nonetheless, they taught him what they knew, and despite the harsh training (from shic much more so than ko), theo handled it well and was determined to give it his all. if all this could mean an opportunity to escape and be free? hell fucking yeaah he'll take it.
