I liked Beorn the skin changer from the Hobbit though it's very awful that he was the last of his kind something so wonderful had to be so close to extinction... I had a dream that Beorn was going to mate with a human hoping to carry on his skin changer desendents.

I like Beorn too, he's a good character. Odd dream though; you obviously care about him and his progeny a lot!

THE HOBBIT leaves much to the imagination. I refer to Beorn, the One Ring and how Gollum happened to have it, and Gollum himself. Beorn is a werebear, and may not be safe to talk to , when in bear mode.
Gandalf did a splendid job in oratory when getting Beorn to put up 13 dwarves for the night, when he would have little patience with ONE. A high point in the novel.

The guy who turns into a bear!
the details in the hair and the wrinkles in his face!
But, you want to know what really got my attention?
the raging army in the background.
That's so cute!
That detail alone is amazing!
If you wouldn't have included that, something would have been missing.

Again, sincere thanks Yes, it's Β the sense that these scenes are part of a bigger picture that make them come alive, I feel. Or at least that's my hope and intention

I think you did a very good job with that.
If that detail wouldn't have been there, I think it would have been like any other portrait painting.
That detail gave it life.

You're very kind with your words here - thank you so much. It was fun to paint the raw, beastly power of Beorn in this one

Brothers in arms, Outnumbered and Barad Dur. They're all a bit older, but I'm not complaining.

That's great man, I really like those pieces. I managed to get my Beren & Luthien work into the DoS EE last year, and this time round there's obviously this one in consideration, as well as Elwing Bearing the Silmaril. I'm also working my way through a few commissions for them: basically all the Silm pieces I've put up recently, and more forthcoming. There're quite a few scenes that I've done line work for, only to be told that the scene has been cut out because of time constraints etc.. No big deal, some good subject material for future paintings! Anyways, fingers crossed for both you and for me

I should say, my friend, that as in your case and in the case of all whom WB have contacted, these pieces will only be paid upon making the cut

Probably THE most epic entrance in the Battle of the Five Armies! No offense to Thorin and the Eagles.

I haven't watched the movie; I doubt that I'll enjoy it. Unless you meant the book, but you wrote Battle ofΒ the Five Armies, so I guess not ...

JeantineHobbit In reply to peet [2015-01-08 14:26:08 +0000 UTC]
I actually did mean the book. And I too doubt that you will enjoy the third Hobbit movie. But in case you still want to watch it, here's a tip: pretend it's a Marvel movie made in New Zeland that just had the good fortune of being based on Tolkien's works rather than comic books.
Spoiler Alert!
Beorn sky-dives into the battlefield from the back of an eagle, skin-changes and attacks orcs (this is a very short sequence only ) Legolas get's waaay too much screentime and so does Alfrid who is being used as comic relief. Thorin's funeral, Dain's coronation, the resolution of the Arkenstone story-arc are not shown in the theatrical version. (They'll most probably be in the Extended version, though and let's just hope their good). On a positive note, the build-up to the battle is my favorite part of the movie (always nice to see the filmmakers getting very close to the source material here and there
) and Bilbo's return to Hobbiton!

Thanks for the heads up. None of this surprises me, and I'm pretty unmoved either way. I know its almost sacrilege to say these days, but I didn't like PJ's LotR adaptation let alone Hobbit.Β I don't find Hollywood interesting in the least at the best of times, especially when it tramples clumsily (and I'm being extremely judicious here) all over literature - my favourite literary artist at that. I watched all of them up until Desolation,Β but can't stomach giving that rabble any more of my money. I might get round to it when it comes out on Netflix in a few months time.

Yeah, Holywood tends to mess up great works for the sake of making money. That being said, I actually loved the movie-version of Fellowship of the Ring (I actually like the whole LotR Trilogy since it actually convinced me to pick up the Original Tolkien books-which I now love more than the films ) it's the best of all the M-e films in my opinion. That's probably because they were more concerned with doing Tolkien justice when they made it as compared to the other films. But I do like some of the Canon-based additions they made to the Hobbit films. And I love their design for Smaug as well as Benedict Cumberbatch's performance! I also loved the first two Harry Potter movies over the rest in their respective series! You go ahead and wait for BotFA on Netflix. My greatest disappointment in the theater was that my two hours of holding my pee wasn't justified.

I suppose that is the one silver-lining, in that the movies encouraged many to pick the books up. But by the same token, because many of those who picked said books up actually found them to be more 'boring', and less 'action-packed', than the movies, they did not give them a chance, and hastily put them back down again. In other words, expectations have forever been modified, 'lowered' in my view, about what LotRΒ and Hobbit is/are.

JeantineHobbit In reply to peet [2015-02-05 23:35:19 +0000 UTC]
I never had any pacing issues with the Hobbit book (because I read it before watching the film version that actually had pacing issues). However I did have pacing issues with LotR (having watched the films before reading). Despite that, I finished reading all of it and looking back, I see that they are the richest and most imaginative books I've ever read. For me, my reading experience matched the Quest of the Fellowship: exciting, boring, action-packed, slow, fast, mysterious, surprising, scary, annoying, awe-inspiring, etc. So much positive and negative aspects combined in one Quest/Book, but looking back on everything... It was all worth it!

That makes sense. Personally, I think only Book I can be slow in parts (much to do with the Prof not knowing where the hell this sequel to The Hobbit was going !), but other than that, it was too short for me - if you know what I mean. How's The Silm going?
