Description
'Under her song the saplings grew and became fair and tall, and came to flower; and thus there awoke in the world the Two Trees of Valinor. Of all things which Yavanna made they have most renown, and about their fate all the tales of the Elder days are woven. The one had leaves of dark green that beneath were as shining silver, and from each of his countless flowers a due of silver light was ever falling, and the earth beneath was dappled with the shadows of his fluttering leaves. The other bore leaves of a young green like the new-opened beech; their edges were of glittering gold. Flowers swung upon her branches in clusters of yellow flame, formed each to a glowing horn that spilled a golden rain upon the ground; and from the blossom of that tree there came forth warmth and a great light.'

this is one of the dtrawings that i didn't like at all.it looks like it's been made by a kid who has just received some water colours and can't wait to use them.compaired to the others it is very simplistic.i imagined the two trees to be situated in some sorth of garden, not on some plain.they look like ordinary trees and the glowing effect ain't that great,as a matter of fact it makes them look unfinished.

Okay, fair enough. I really don't see how this looks like a piece painted by a kid, other than you're right, it is more simplistic that the others. But that was deliberate -- I didn't feel it needed an absolute wealth of detail to get the overall composition across.
I would love to see your portrayal of the Two Trees if you have such a fixed view on what they should look like.

beautiful, exactly how i pictured them
Then Manwe bade Yavanna and Nienna to put forth all their powers of growth and healing; and they put forth all their powers on the Trees. But the tears of Nienna availed not to heal their mortal wounds; and for a long while Yavanna sang alone in the shadows.

wow, great job which is something you've probably heard ever since you posted this, but it is a fine work of art! beautiful colours and how the trees look, they look like normal trees, i envisioned then as.....trees that no one had ever sen before, trees that were undescribable. Now that i've seen your work, it makes everything else seem more "normal" if you will. great job!

Well, I've always gained a sense of realism when reading Tolkien's work, even when he writes about rather fantastical elements, and I like to apply this to my work. I want to familiarise the viewer in a sense, so that it's easier for them to accept and place what they're viewing in the own minds to the words that Tolkien writes. As I've said before, Tolkien's works seem more historical to me rather than fantasy. I really see where you're coming from though .

His work seems more historical than a fantasy to me as well, but i guess its the way he describes everything. It makes it seem as though its fantasy from the past, so its historical and a fantasy at the same time. i dont know if you get that, but I'm glad that you drew the trees like normal trees, it makes his world more historical that way.

Oh, I definitely get what you mean. But the fact that they're both colours 'not of this world' are, I feel, enough to represent the Fantasy that we're talking about here . Thanks again for commenting

I love how the lean to the trees and the brushing of the grass makes it almost look like it's moving...
Great detail on the trees! Awesome job! Congrats on the DD!!

I don't usually fave works that already have lots and lots of faves already (for some reason), but this is Tolkien-inspired, and especially one of his more intelligent works (yes kiddies, it does get better than LOTR). So I'm gonna cave. This is the reason I love watercolour; it has a nice classic feel to it.

This is so beautiful, and absolutely true to the book. You are my hero.
The contrast of bright colours and white highlights is extremely well-done, and the feeling matches the mood of Mr. Tolkien's writing perfectly. This has been mentioned, but the Silver Tree seems to thicken towards the top instead of branching. Overall, very well-executed.

I'm fascinated that someone drew a picture of them. I've always wondered how it would be possible to capture giving off light; you've really done a good job. Laurelin is great and I'm impressed with the way you've carried off silver and green for the leaves of Teleperion. What's especially nice is that you've given character to these trees; with Teleperion being the darker, bigger, 'male' one etc.
Interesting that you've portrayed them in this way, as though they were in a field. I've always imagined them to be right in the centre of a great courtyard. And i've always imagined them to be thinner, less 'tree-y', if you get me, mroe stylistic. however, I know your style wouldn't go towards that, and I still veyr much like this interpretaiton. Congrats on DD; your work deserves many

Amazing job, peet ! I read The Silmarillion a year ago but the book lacked on illustrations, I always wanted to know how certain things looked like in the beggining of Arda, things like Morgoth, or Iluvatar, the two trees made by the Valar and especially Sauron's human form heh (im a sucker for evil things and characters, heh). Telperion if i remember correctly, was the white tree which can be seen in ROTK , the movie, but it looks like crap there, your interpretation is so much warmer and has that beautiful aurora of light surrounding it. But it has one flaw, in my opinion - its too huge, loses from the feeling of greatness...The second tree, which name I can't remember, people said Laurelin but that aint ringing any bells in my mind, looks more like an elegant woman, maybe because its further in the background, but, nevertheless, it shines ! Awesome radiant feeling, warmth. That may be due to the colors too, bright and friendly Since im a Tolkien fan and this painthing rocks my world, gonna +fav it and someday print it somehow to make it a poster since I dont have the money to order a print. This should be on every Tolkien's fan wall !

This is so striking! You've captured the light falling from the Two Trees, something that has me awed, also I love the details and the pair of cloaked elves walking near them whose soft, shadowed shapes give scale to the vastness of the Two Trees. Even if the trunk of the silver tree is a bit broader toward the top than at the base, that only hints at two more branches going to each side -- I didn't find it jarring and on a second look there's a huge branch coming forward and a widening behind it as if there's a graceful three-way split to main branches -- the one situation where a tree will wind up wider above the base is when it begins to bulge to form main branches.
Their shapes are elegant, the colors perfect and I'm stunned that you did this in watercolor. I don't have nearly that much control of the medium yet and would have to use pencil to get close to anything like this! Not to mention I have not yet tried using sources of magical light within a painting.
Inspirational! Thanks for posting it!
