Description 'Under her song the saplings grew and became fair and tall, and came to flower; and thus there awoke in the world the Two Trees of Valinor. Of all things which Yavanna made they have most renown, and about their fate all the tales of the Elder days are woven.
The one had leaves of dark green that beneath were as shining silver, and from each of his countless flowers a due of silver light was ever falling, and the earth beneath was dappled with the shadows of his fluttering leaves. The other bore leaves of a young green like the new-opened beech; their edges were of glittering gold. Flowers swung upon her branches in clusters of yellow flame, formed each to a glowing horn that spilled a golden rain upon the ground; and from the blossom of that tree there came forth warmth and a great light.'

Nice....reminds me a bit of Tolkein's artwork, too. The 50th Ann. edition of the trilogy was illustrated with some of his artworks....

Beautiful work I recently read The Silmarillion again and immediately recognised the painting from the thumbnail without having to look at the title. Excellent composition and use of negative space in giving the two trees an interaction. They almost look like lovers holding hands Bravo!

Christopher Tolkien ruined the wonderful story of the Silmarillion when he just compiled his fathers notes and such.

Tolkien is such a great inspiration for art.
personally i imagined the two trees to be more like oak or willow trees, like with the drooping branches dripping with light. but then thats the beauty of books, everyone can imagine things the way they want

great work.

oh yea, i'm just curious, who are the figures you placed under the trees? are they from a part of the story or just random figures?

Amaaazing. Very 'realistic', they look like actual trees but with that beautiful glow and colour.
I've always seen the Trees as more mythical and less actual or sort of 'treeish' (NOT implying that the Two Trees were Huorns! ).. But this style is so much like Ted Nasmith..
And having the Trees look more realistic makes Aman more tangible and real.. Very interesting..
And I love the lighting here.. Maybe the glow from the Trees could be mroe prominent, but it's a beeeaautiful paiting.

peet In reply to inziladun [2004-01-02 16:11:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, once again. I know what you mean. I used to find it a little difficult to imagine Valinor as a 'real' place. But then I thought, well, it had to be hospitable and not wholly disconnected from the fundamental aspects of life in 'our' world (be that physically, geographically or even practically) for the Elves to be able to live there. They are, obviously, physical beings, therefore their surroundings must have been so too, including of course, the Two Trees. As for their glow? Well, try to imagine that these are the very lowest branches of the trees, and that in actuality, the Trees themselves are incredibly tall, reaching further and further towards the heavens. For me, it is there that their strongest rays of light are, for otherwise, they would literally blind the Elves. They're pretty much 'doing the job' of the Sun and the Moon for the whole of Valinor -- and the Sun and Moon wouldn't be very effective if at ground level, in terms of giving off light (or perhaps I should say, giving of TOO much light)

LOL excellent points. Yeah it ads a lot when you look at the image like that, thanks!
I have seen a picture of Yavanna's trees in the Spring of Arda, can't remember by whom, but they were huge.. I think I'll use that image as a reference from now on.

Amazing Pete Strikes Again! this is a fantastic interpretation of the two trees. The shapes and the colours really shows the beauty and mystique that were of the old days in Arda. I, however, imagined them incredibly huge, kinda like the giant tree in Final Fantasy IX(can't remember its name)
But as always when it comes to litterature; everyone have a vision of their own, and it's very interesting to see another person's imaginations. Great work my friend!

Hey, I LOVE the two trees! You drew them very nice....I prefer Telperion cuz I like silver more than gold but both are so wonderful. And most important: The creator is Yavanna who is the greatest Vala in MY eyes

Great job!

I was just thinking when you'd put out some more of your art. I find this very different from your other works, because you used these bright colours, but it works really well for this painting. that yellow is very strong, I like it. Those white flowers on the foreground are a nice touch. Hmm...I have one point tho..a little one..I think that a tree can't grow thicker towards the top.
