So true story, I strongly considered Blue Mary for Lyta's costume, but I decided against it because I wasn't sure people would recognize her. (Also Asuka Kazama, but I don't think I would even recognize Asuka Kazama).

Mai, I think, is one of those characters that people recognize even if they aren't familiar with Fatal Fury/KOF at all - they'll have seen art and cosplay and other things, just around the internet and the world at large. And if you're Miyuki a revealing celebrity ninja costume is a natural choice.

I would have also assumed everyone knows who Mai is because she’s Mai f-ing Shiranui... but then she wasn’t included as a cameo in Smash for being too sexy the internet’s reaction has been “who’s Mai? (Googles) oooooooooh” so like I said, kids these days no respect for the classics! It makes me feel very old, but at least Terry’s fun to play as!

I had to look up who Asuka was myself, but I really don’t like Tekken (3D fighting just ain’t my thing) so anything beyond Heihachi or the Bear I would have had to look up anyway.

True, I am often surprised by what people on the internet don't know. But to be fair to people who are too young to remember the older generation of games, they usually aren't ported to new media the way books or music or movies are (before the HD release on Steam, I couldn't play AOE 2 without it becoming psychedelic because Windows changed the way it displays colors between 95 and now). And you can kind of see why - the first gen polygon graphics haven't aged well at all, and on a modern TV or monitor you can really tell (sprites do better, and Mai was always a sprite).

On the other hand, Mai was in SNK Heroines, and that just came out last year.

I played a certain amount of Tekken in college because someone had it for whatever the current PS was at the time, but we all either played as Kuma (because it's funny) or Paul Phoenix because he had a cheap super punch that was just about a one hit kill, and as I recall you could start charging it before the fight started. There are many other characters, but don't ask me who they are.

Well, Miyuki can help raise some Mai awareness, at least until she loses that costume in a (checks poll) rigged game of chance to the (spins mummy wheel) Mummy Princess. I'm not sure yet what they'll play, Fatal Fury would be funny, but it's not a game of chance (or easily rigged).
