Description
Lyta awoke on a hard stone slab, ornately engraved but worn smooth through age. She was bound at one ankle with what felt like a jungle vine, but one ankle only; she could move around the stone, but not away from it. In any event, the pit surrounding her was pitch black, and she could only guess how deep. As she sat up her hand bumped against a smooth, flat wood implement, which proved to be a macuahuitl, a hardwood club studded with obsidian blades, the traditional weapon of Aztec knights. Only then did she understand - the Temalacatl! They meant to sacrifice her through ritual gladiatorial combat! Lyta gripped the macuahuitl tightly and prepared herself as a skeletal rattle echoed from the darkness around her, growing steadily louder...

Lyta's haunted summer! Finally! Not one to take things lying down (or tied to a pole) Lyta takes matters into her own hands. The sacrificial victim in the temalacatl was normally tied to the center of the stone (I drew this before reading too thoroughly about it), and often had only a symbolic weapon (feathers instead of obsidian) but to be fair, they were supposed to be killed without fighting back much. The monolith in the background was created from a photo of a Mayan monolith I took in San Diego.
