The shore temple at Mahabalipuram. The temple is built on a large rocky outcropping overlooking the Bay of Bengal - originally it was built right on the beach, but the ASI has built a walled enclosure that separates it both physically and visually - I understand why it's there, but it's really too bad. The temple dates from the 7th Century CE.The larger temple was originally dedicated to Shiva, but the statue was removed at some point and so the temple was deconsecrated. The smaller temple is dedicated to Kali, (the statue remains).
