Rift Dragons are a species of extra-celestial life forms that spend their lives in search of a dying star within which they can lay their eggs, which are the spherical gems often seen growing in their foreheads and chests, rarely in their midsection or 'hips'. Once laid, their bodies disseminate and join the energies of the star. When the star's life cycle ends and inevitably explodes, cataclysmic energies are released, causing the formation of a black hole. Most of the energy is absorbed by the egg in the process however and is simultaneously transported through space, often time, and even dimensions where it will repeat its life cycle. Whatever remaining energy kick-starts the formation of new stars and planets. It is unknown how long a Rift Dragon can live, but many have traveled for hundreds of millions of years across billions of light years to find the perfect nesting ground to lay its eggs. Rift Dragons do not require a mate of the opposite gender to reproduce as they are technically gender-less and reproduce through self-sacrifice.

Their bodies do not immediately gain form, but when they do, they could be described by a sapient creature as semi-transparent, possessing the quality of a Terran Jelly-fish or similar invertebrate. This is their larval form and they will retain this form for much of their life. They lack internal organs, meaning they have no need to consume food or eliminate waste. Their bodies contain no internal or external skeletal structure. They also lack a vascular system, but have an analog through which the cosmic energies that formed them flow. Their bodies pulse gently like that of a mortal heartbeat.

Throughout their travels, A Rift may come across a planet containing sapient life and since they are curious creatures, they will explore the world while taking a form similar to that of the dominant species.

A Rift Dragon's only known predator is a creature that prowls the galactic tides in search of stars to eat, both young and old and a creature born from a star is not off the menu.
