Description Hello!

It's been much too long between my uploads again, sorry! I've been much too busy with other issues to do anything else but a few sketches and all my coloring time on Photoshop is dedicated to my comics and commissions.

In any case, here's yet another WIP that I plan to finish- I have several others that are not so high on the "will-be-finished-definately"-list, but this one was on it and I think deserves to be uploaded. It depicts a Crayven Corporation command armoured personnel carrier, as seen in Ground Control(a strategy game published in 2000, look it up). You can see cross-sections of the different areas of the vehicle: the driver's compartment, central compartment with the Field Commader's room along with an access port to the gun turret(automated) and the rear infantry compartment with access hatch below. Some details of the tracks and transmission are shown as well. The model in the game itself was not nearly as detailed as the game is really old so I made up many of the details based on the description of the vehicle in the game manual.

This will be completed later along with the cyberpunk and zeppelin piece once I can spare the time- probably after I'm done with this big comic project I'm on now. If you guys want to see more of such sketches, tell me because I usually only want to upload stuff that I will finish and not just WIP sketches. But if it seems interesting, I'll change the policy.

Just found this on accident in a google search of the command APC when another original piece reminded me of it. This is an utterly outstanding cross section, and of a vehicle from one of my favorite (yet also obscure) games. GREAT job. In fact, upon finding this I've decided that I'm going to start trawling around DA again, been gone a long while. Despite its reputation, there's definitely still a lot of talented people on here.Β  Followed!

Glad you like it. There's definately a lot of people on dA who have great skill but close to no following at all and it's always nice to find a hidden gem like that. Unlike with the more popular professionals who have profiles here, you can actually have discussions with them- but you really have to search through heaps of profiles!

Thanks!

This has inspired me to pursue building a motorized LEGO version of the Rhino and I have therefore frequently been returning to this illustration as I plan out my build. I've also been playing the game a lot more and scrutinizing the APC, which led me to spot a notable difference between the game model and your illustration.

You've placed what looks like a vent at the front of the lower hull and included what I interpret as storage bays on the horizontal surface up beside the cockpit. The game model, however, has the vent/radiator beside the cockpit (see the link below), which would be a more sensical position for a vent considering how an underside-mounted vent would get clogged and damaged far more easily as the vehicle maneuvers over rocks, through swamps, etc.

gcvets.wordpress.com/crayven-a…

I am uncertain whether this was an intentional, artistic change to improve aesthetics but, since you are planning to take this all the way to a full-color infographic, I figure I should make any suggestions while it's still in its WIP stage. If you do switch your storage bays by the cockpit with vents, perhaps replace your vent on the lower hull with an armored door to provide access for mechanics to the engine and transmission.

Yeah, you might have a point there but it does come down to how you interpret the very low-detail model in the game. To me the grid between the tracks looks more like a vent of some kind than the one next to the driver's position which looks like an anti-slip surface. That's only my view though. I do agree the vent would gather all kinds of crap and bullets for that matter very easily and let water into the engine compartment- but that might not necessarily be all that bad if the engine air intake isn't submerged. That might be situated higher on the hull in a different place, or the engine might have a snorkel like the one you see on some modern AFVs and 4x4s. There's also the practical benefit of combining the power pack with the radiator when they are close to each other- that way they can both be removed for maintanace easily. Why would they have the vent facing forward where the fire is likely to come from is beyond me. That's just what I thought the game model looked like. The vent could use an armoured door to keep out at least the lighter incoming fire. That's not pictured though. I wouldn't be too concerned over the vent hitting rocks or any natural obstacles since military hardware is often pretty tough and can take some serious beating- most problems in AFVs come from lacking maintanance and spares in my experience rather than external influence.

That said I really want to see the Lego model in action! Maybe I should try out making a Lego model out of the APC as well, though not motorized...

Thanks!

I doubt the Sierra modellers intended for their low-res designs to be picked apart in such detail.

With modern tanks (at least those of the US Army that I have been on) all horizontal surfaces that the crew could be expected to traverse are coated with a high-friction texture that has the feel of extremely rough sandpaper. It is totally inconspicuous and therefore makes me continue to think of that grating pattern as a heat exchanger. And you definitely want to keep as much foreign substance out of your engine compartment as possible. Imagine trying to fix something after your engine has been entombed within the compartment by dried mud.

I am unfamiliar with the theoretical requirements of fusion engines, which the Rhino has, and therefore won't guess at the need for snorkels. It might not even need an air intake for all I know.

Military hardware is not inherently durable, it is only so because it has been meticulously designed that way.

Anyway, food for thought. As an engineer I have a gimlet eye for this kind of stuff and it is definitely intensified by my enthusiasm for Ground Control. Still cannot wait to see your completed graphic!

True and I also think many of the designs are simply done following the design philosophy of whatever looks cool- nothing wrong with that, just makes figuring things out for cross-sections that much harder. It'd be easier doing these on the OND vehicles since I could use more imagination in placing the different parts.

Yes, it's the same with the Leopards here- the old russian tanks we had did have something visually similar to what is on the model but I'm not really sure if they'd stil be using that in the year 2547. And yes dried mud would probably make for a very nice day of cleaning after the action... as for a fusion engine air intake, I haven't the faintest clue. I do imagine it'd need one for the radiator though.

Oh and I sent you a note regarding this vehicle.

Oh, this is fantastic! You just earned yourself another watcher. As a decades-long fan of GC, I strongly admire the level of detail that you have decided to put into this illustration (and as a mechanical engineer, I am also a huge cut-away enthusiast).

I would love to see more from the GC universe (dare I suggest the HOG?). Keep up the amazing work!

Oh, thanks! New watchers are always welcome! If you're into GC, you might like this little project I've been working on too(provided you remember this gun from the cover art):Β

penuser.deviantart.com/art/Wel…

The HOG was definately one of my favourite vehicles from GC, if not the number one favourite! It would be a nice piece to make this type of cross-section from, there are certainly many areas on that vehicle which would have that "oh so that's how that works!"-feeling to them like the multi-barrel weapon system and the recoil mechanism. I always thought that it looked weird how a rectangular section around the barrel moved forward while the barrel assembly moved back when it was firing. If I did a cross-section on it, I'm sure I'd have to think of something that causes that movement... speaking of the HOG, you can tell the design had a great effect on me and I made several designs based on the same idea for an artillery vehicle- the first ones pretty blatant rip-offs as I see them today but the design evolved later on to the mobile anti-orbital weapon platform you can see on the last link in the background. I altered the original idea and kept only some of the same ideas and shapes from the HOG, so I consider the final design a nice little nod towards the GC design. It features later on in that same comic, too(haven't drawn those pages yet though!)

One of the first iterations:
penuser.deviantart.com/art/GAU…
On to this design...
penuser.deviantart.com/art/Feu…
...and finally something different:
lastmission.smackjeeves.com/co…

There's a lot of other pics and designs that have clear influence from GC, and I think they're quite apparent if you look through my gallery.

The shield-gun is definitely something that would be cool to hold on your hand. I would personally have gone with the desert color scheme myself, but neat regardless.

As for the HOG, it seems that a cutaway illustration would take a good deal more thought than the Crayven APC as the APC is mostly interior design opposed to the HOG's doubtlessly-complicated gun mechanism. The HOG has certainly given me a good deal of inspiration as well. I recently built a dieselpunk HOG (out of LEGO, of course) with a motorized gun and I'll send you a link when I get around to uploading it.

I played GC a lot back when it came out(I think I got the game from a sale in the local shop in 2001) and just recently re-installed the game to play the campaign again. I have to say it has aged really well! Still enjoyed it greatly. GC had a great influence on my scifi-art, so you can spot many a homage paid to the designs from GC in my gallery if you look through it... I did play World in Conflict as well when it came out, I just loved the multiplayer and the call-down support fire. Gotta love those nuclear blasts.
