Description Hi!

This one has been much too long in making, but I found some time here and there to finalize this one with colors. I decided to make this into an infographic with numbered points accompanied with descriptions written with information from the Ground Control field commander's manual which was sold with the game and patching some holes with my own imagination and deduction. I also tried to emulate the game UI's look for the text boxes, which I think came out ok. Fans of the game will no doubt find many details from the original Ground Control- I hope others will find this piece of speculative sci-fi fan-art interesting. All critisism and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Enjoy!

Original A3, Micron fineliners colored with Photoshop CS3.

Gotta love the detail of Sarah Parker being in the command room.

You gonna make one of these cross-sections for a vehicle from GC2? Maybe one of the Terran Hoverdynes?

PenUser In reply to Dafuqer7 [2019-04-14 17:09:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there's a lot of little details like that in these GC illustrations, mainly in the text. Many sentences have been taken directly from the little booklet GC came with back in the day and there's references to some characters for example.

I hadn't thought about GC 2 but yeah, the terran empire designs we're really nice for the most part. I didn't really like the walkers all that much, but the hoverdynes we're very nice. We'll see.

Dafuqer7 In reply to PenUser [2019-04-14 20:24:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the Striders were a bit boring, but the Hoverdynes are some of the more unique designs I've seen in Sci-fi.

I get the feeling that if you make a cross section for a GC2 vehicle, it's gonna be the Destroyer Hoverdyne, due to it pretty much being the most iconic vehicle in the entire game, aside from maybe the NSA Dropship.

I'm working on the OND hoverbike(sketch is in my gallery) and Crayven Artillery terradyne right now, I'm just having a bit of a hard time making time in the schedule to work on them. I plan on making more of these in addition to those but schedule on completion is a bit hazy. I am planning to work on the infantry next after those two but that might be some time away.

I am also working on a cosplay suit of the Crayven Marine that was featured on the boxart, there are some pics in my scraps folder. I should really make a decent gallery post on that project...

Thanks!

And then I found this. I had hoped your cross section might eventually get colored haha, came out as great as I expected. Love what is clearly Parker in the middle, talking to what appear to be Jaegers? LOVE IT!

PenUser In reply to hammerghast [2016-09-18 22:20:39 +0000 UTC]

Of course it is Parker, I wouldn't have drawn Dwight there. Her sidearm is actually from the dark conspiracy cover art, but the hairstyle is from original GC. I just liked the ponytail style better.

Some people still play it too- there's a small multiplayer community that regularily sets up games. They have their forums here: www.gcvets.net/index.php

If you like Ground Control, you might want to check out the few pics I have of my ongoing Crayven marine costume build in my scraps folder.

Thanks!

Yeah, I will definitely have to do that. I, unfortunately, don't really have time to doing multiplayer games, but man, I have some great memories from back in the day with that game.

Looks awesome dude!!! Β Bit confused by your explanation though. Β Is this merely a fan drawing of something from a game or your own original design?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

PenUser In reply to LightspeedToVictory [2016-08-13 18:32:15 +0000 UTC]

Kind of a mix- the game in question is really old, and the unit models are low in detail so I've had to interpret a lot when considering the placement of modules inside and outside the vehicle. You can check from google how the oroginal APC model looks like by searching "crayven apc".

Thanks!

It's from a game called "Ground Control", which is an late '90s, early '00s RTS. A fantastic game, even by today's standards.Β

RRaillery [2016-07-30 16:28:02 +0000 UTC]

This is absolutely outstanding! The coloring is excellent, but the presentation of the infographic is what really amazes me- the text sections look like they've been pulled straight from the game. I've said this before, but your attention to detail is fantastic and certainly nothing has gone overlooked. You even have security notices and access log documentation along the bottom!

I've never ordered a print before, but this has me seriously considering it. This work deserves more than mere verbal praise.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PenUser In reply to RRaillery [2016-07-30 22:06:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Making the text boxes look like the game UI was a bit of a chore since I had to simplify the style somewhat from the slightly excessive style of the original game and search for correct looking fonts etc.. It was a load of work but now I can use the same assets for other similar pieces I have planned- I was thinking I might draw a cross-section of the OND scout hoverbike next(or maybe the Crusader armor?). It seems like a nice little thing I could manage on my spare time, much less detail and technical stuff the think about on that. After that, maybe the HOG?

It'd be nice if you'd buy the print- to my knowledge the dA print shop works fine, but I could also provide you with the high-res tiff-file of this and you could source the print from your local print shop.

Just looking through the dA print shop options, it looks like the sides get cut short in the previews. I think I'll look into my local printing locations.

OND cross-sections would probably be a lot easier since you wouldn't need to pay as much attention to mechanical element given their plasma/electrical technology. I look forward to seeing what you come up with, though my vote would be for the scout hoverbike.

PenUser In reply to RRaillery [2016-08-06 16:46:20 +0000 UTC]

True, true. I'd still like to make them look somewhat believable, even if it is scifi-tech. We'll see what I can come up with! The hoverbike will probably be my pick, since I have a clear idea on the different parts of it, and also because of the small size and lesser complexity of the vehicle.
