Description Hi!

This one has been much too long in making, but I found some time here and there to finalize this one with colors. I decided to make this into an infographic with numbered points accompanied with descriptions written with information from the Ground Control field commander's manual which was sold with the game and patching some holes with my own imagination and deduction. I also tried to emulate the game UI's look for the text boxes, which I think came out ok. Fans of the game will no doubt find many details from the original Ground Control- I hope others will find this piece of speculative sci-fi fan-art interesting. All critisism and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Enjoy!

Original A3, Micron fineliners colored with Photoshop CS3.

From what game is this?
Do you recommend drawing in A3 paper?
I've always used A4, but there's isn't enough room for details

Ground Control, an RTS game from 16 years ago. One of the first RTS' to implement 3D graphics.

I'd recommend drawing on whichever paper size fits you and the task at hand. I personally use anything between A7 and A2 which is the maximum practical I can fit into my scanner. Occasionally I also paint and draw on larger surfaces as well, but I don't post those here. So just work in whichever way best fits your workstyle- experiment!

Thanks!

Perfection! This was one of my fav games back in the day. So many good memories...

I always liked the design of that unit, and you did it great justice. Makes me want to make a 3d model of this. Β

Me too! I still occasionally play it and just recently I acquired the dark conspiracy expansion to the original game... it was interesting playing "new" missions for such an old game from my childhood!

Thanks!

The original Ground Control has been available for free from many filesharing sites for years now so it shouldn't be a problem if you'd like to play it. The thing is, the game was released 16 years ago so most players would find it dated in many ways... for me it is still excellent though- but many would say that's the nostalgia speaking. Gameplaywise it's still top class in the RTS genre, no doubt. I'd recommend checking it out if you don't mind the graphics.

Thanks!

Ground Control is available here:

www.gog.com/game/ground_contro…

still very worth playing, imho, and interesting to see as a piece of gaming history. GC2 is also there, but is less exciting, imho, having some very nice features but losing the best aspects of the original game

Are you going to do the trooper armor as well? That would be great!

Well, I am in the process of building a set for myself(check my scraps folder for WIP photos) but I think you meant a similar infographic? That might be a fun project to do at some point... I was thinking of maybe making a few of these GC cross-sections, so I might yet do it.

Thanks!

Was looking for a drawing/infographic, because these suits always looked cool but I just cant find any decent art of em, they would be great as reference.

I have one infographic I did for my comic project which features a suit inspired be the Crayven marine armor which can be found from the gallery. I also found a concept art pic of the marine suit on the net a year ago or so, but I've since lost it as the site hosting it disappeared. Maybe I'll make a proper infographic on it later on- there seems to be people interested to see it.

WOW. I'm surprised that nobody has commented yet! This looks like real professional work!

There are tons of details to pore over, especially at the cut aways of the guts of the weapons and treads and hell the floor is even patterned. The colors are applied painstakingly, with a desert camo scheme that is appropriate, and even the scars of battle look genuine. The only complaint I can make is that the faces are a little less detailed than they can be, but I have a feeling you aren't working with a lot of space for that. I wouldn't worry about though, sinceΒ the body proportions for the people are good.

Keep up the good work, dude!

PenUser In reply to TumultOfZen [2016-07-30 21:29:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the original piece was made on an A3 size paper so there wasn't really all that much space for very minute details like that. The faces are mostly around 10- 15mm size IRL. I agree there could've been more detail, but in that case I should've used a larger paper size to get a measurably better level or add more digitally.

Thanks!
