Description

Hello!

I thought the old version of this map needed some updating so I remade it in digital form, expanded.

Here's art related to this worldbuilding project:

Here's some lore:

Nations on the map, listed in order from more powerful ones to more insignificant ones:

Empire of Sweger: Situated on the continent's eastern shores, the Empire of Sweger is a technologically advanced nation with perhaps the most advanced weaponry fielded by its armies and navy. They are ruled by an Emperor de jure, but the de facto leader is the Prince Regent as the Emperor has become frail and demented over the last decade. The Prince has recently started many expansive wars, mainly against Dolska, to reach the Mainean Bay from where they could have access to the Aurian Ocean to the south. With the war still raging between Sweger and Dolska, outcome of the occupied territory hangs in the balance. The Prince has also been keen to encircle the Aurian Empire which he sees ripe for invasion- this has led to the invasion of the Herdan passage across the Aurian mountains to prepare for the "imminent" invasion. The Herdan state has completely disintegrated into a tribal war zone where the Empire's forces have been humiliated by technologically inferior peasant militias, setting back the clock on the invasion attempt into Aurian Empire territory.

Federated Republic of Frasia: To the north of Sweger lies the Federated Republic of Frasia, a wide plain stretching from river Blut to the shores of the northern ocean. This powerful but very fractured state has only been in existence for a few decades after the fall of the Frasian royal family in internal disputes which led to the parliament declaring the Federation. It is currently allied with several smaller states in an attempt to create an encirclement of the Sweger and to hold them from invading their territories further. The Blut pocket was annexed by Sweger during the collapse of the royal family, which has led to border skirmishes along the river. The Frasian army relies heavily on their reserve of infantry manpower to field vast armies against any aggressor, as well as its large naval force. The state has a two capital-system with sea-territories administered by the sea-capital with a similar arrangement for designated land territories.

Aurian Empire: The Aurian Empire was once much larger, encompassing the territories of the Morlandian Monarchy, the Morlandian Republic ad the Republic of Auria. Since a century ago, the Aurian Empire has been on the decline with several protectorates slipping to other empires and former territories becoming independent. The empire still has a grasp on a vast and very resource-rich landmass, boasting good naval strength and easily defended borders across the Aurian mountain range and river Auricum. It also holds the Chikauri Kingdom as a protectorate and a de facto province of its empire.

Twin monarchies of Peshi and Nushu: The northern twin monarchies of Peshi and Nushu were originally splinter factions of the ancient Pyrrhan Empire which spanned half the continent. After having separated from it, the two states eventually agreed on a personal union between the monarchs of each state, a pact which has held for close to a century. The states have a well-developed military with effective fast armor that can cover great distances in quick campaigns. Currently these new armoured units have been taking part in the annexation of ethnically Peshian territory from Nazerstan. The expansionist monarchy is presumed to be planning a full-scale invasion of Nazerstan in the near future, using their newly developed "northern wind" fast battle tactics.

Pyrrhan Empire: Boasting the title "Her Majesty, the Right Excellent Queen of the Western and Eastern Pyrrhan Empire", the absolute monarch of the ancient Pyrrhan Empire holds sway over the largest empire on the continent. That said, most of her empire consists of the Pyrrhan desert which holds no significant resources. In addition, the empire has lost most of its eastern territories as its power and military prowess has vaned over the centuries. These territories are now the independent states situated west of the Neurath range dividing the continent. Also, roughly half of the remaining territories are economically useless to the empire and act as buffer zones only. These provinces include the northern autonomous areas and the great Pyrrhan desert. Currently it is beset by internal strife and skirmishes between political factions attempting to influence the monarch. The Pyrrhan army is mainly outdated and many units are but ceremonial, armed with poor weaponry mainly used to quell rebellions. The only significant military presence is concentrated in the eastern border province and its fortifications. The empire has maintained it's size only because of the natural obstacles in the way of any enemy trying to invade its heartland.

Lesser but still significant nations:

Dolska: A nation surrounded by mountain ranges situated in the center of the continent, Dolska is a conservative monarchy which has been invaded by the Empire of Sweger in their drive to the Mainean bay. Their military is largely outdated, but large. The Sweger advance has recently been halted and even pushed back with the aid of Frasian weapons shipments. A combined assault against the Empire of Sweger by an Alliance of Frasia, Dolska, Herland and Tolitsia is rumored.

Herland: An island nation to the east of the continent, Herland lives by its naval forces. Herlandian navy is the largest in the world and on par technologically to the Sweger navy, unchallenged on the Tempest ocean. They have been engaged in hostilities with both the Frasian and Sweger empires, changing sides according to who has given the better deal to bring the Herland navy to their side. Poor in natural resources, Herland relies on diplomatic games to keep their ruling position on the high seas.

Morlandian Republic: Born through a republican uprising in the Morlandian monarchy, the Morlandian republic is a highly militarized nation on the western edge of the Aurian peninsula. They are directly opposed towards the monarchy south of their border, and have even developed a very different culture in the last fifty years after the separation. Their army is large, but not very well equipped due to political differences with the large empires that hold the most advanced weapons. Making up the technological gap with numbers, the Morlandian Republic is highly militarized. Recently to ease tensions with the monarchy, a demilitarization agreement has been signed for a 100km-wide area on their borders.

Morlandian Monarchy: First conceived as a popular movement turned into a violent uprising, the Morean ethnic movement resulted into a monarchy spanning the entire western part of the Aurian peninsula. A century-and-a-half later it would split into two forming the Morlandian Republic. Currently the monarchy is stable, fielding a large army supplied by the Empire of Sweger. Its military power might even be enough to annex parts of the Aurian Empire, but being locked into conflict with the Morlandian Republic, their military strength has been largely stationary in the bunker complexes lining the border to the north. The recent demilitarization agreement might be a change though.

Constitutional Dynasty of Mainea: A splinter faction of the Pyrrhan Empire of old, the Constitutional Dynasty of Mainea is a highly conservative nation, aiming for stability. The nation is comprised of dozens of different ethnicities, vying for power- it was agreed that a royal dynasty bound by constitutional law and a parliament was the most stable form of government for such a fractured state as Mainea. Militarily, Mainea is supplied by a variety of sources, even the tiny island nation of Pichua provides a portion of their military imports(and troops). A constant headache for the Dynasty is the small colony of Golhafen which is a heavily militarized seaport of the Empire of Sweger not far from the Mainean capital. The Swegers hold a considerable sway in their foreign and military policy due to this constant threat.

Vestium: The largest island nation on the eastern shore of the continent, Vestium is populated by people of Vestian descent from across the Tempest ocean. Having settled the island thousands of years ago, they have been independent for the entirety of their history, recently aligning themselves and their naval power with the Aurian Empire, creating tension with their small neighbor to the north, Hadrium, which is a protectorate to the Empire of Sweger. Vestium considers Hadrium as one of their provinces.

Nazerstan: A moderately capable republican nation formed in the dissolution of the Pyrrhan Empire, Nazerstan boasts good natural defences with mountain ranges and rivers naturally blocking access to its central plain. Recently they have been investing heavily on rocket and missile technology in light of the aggression from the Twin Monarchy to the north, hoping to develop long range "wonder weapons" to strike the twin capitals far to the north in the event of a large-scale invasion.

Dokusian Republic: A relatively new nation born during the fall of the Frasian royal family, situated between the Neurath range and river Blut the Dokusian republic has good natural defences to all sides, except to the north. It has in its soil vast oil reserves, which it has successfully used to play diplomatic games to guarantee its independence from Frasia and the Empire of Sweger. The recent stabilization of the Frasian Federation may spell war for Dokusia, as they will have to pick a side in any conflict between Sweger and Frasia.

Tolitsia: A republic in the Aurian mountain range, Tolitsia guards the passage south from the western coast of the Aurian peninsula and currently a war is raging on the entire length of their northern border. Holding this strategic position they have been pressured highly to intervene in the conflict between Dolska and the Empire of Sweger by Frasia. Promising military support by opening a northern front against Sweger, Frasia has pressured Tolitsia to engage the thinly stretched Sweger armies and relieve Dolska, tipping the power balance. Militarily, Tolitsia is strong with a sizeable domestic arms industry and good resources so a new front may well be opened, perhaps setting off another "great war".

Herfjor: This small constitutional monarchy has a sizeable navy in terms of its other capabilities and has been firmly allied with Herland, together holding the navy of the Empire of Sweger captive inside the Imperial sea. Herfjor's heartland is surrounded by high mountains, inaccesible to large armies and any aggressor would have to beat its navy on the sea before being able to mount an assault. During its history, Herfjor has not been successfully invaded.

Derland: This small Aurian mountain range nation has seen empires march across its territory many times in the past. Currently they are allied to the Aurian empire in an effort to hold off the Empire of Sweger from invading them, so far being successful having received military aid from the aurians. If the swegers decide to mount a full-scale invasion though, Derland would most probably turn into a battlefield between the two empires.

Pusisdhzan: A state only recently separated from the Pyrrhan Empire, Pusisdhzan is a technologically backward place on the edge of the northern ocean. Their military even fields such oddities as camel cavalry, with camel-mounted machineguns. The state has been able to remain relatively peaceful due to the poor resources and good natural defences.

Insignificant nations and protectorates:

Chikauri Kingdom: A weak protectorate state of the Aurian Empire, a de facto province. The kingdom is very conservative, ruled by a self-fashioned God-king and has a weak military, completely subservient to the Aurian military command. The nation does serve a very strategic purpose of providing over half of the manpower of the Aurian armies as well as being a buffer state against the highly militarized Morlandian states. The state is also rich in arable land, feeding nearly the entirety of the rest of the Aurian Empire.

Dersha: A small nation comprised of a few ethnically dershan tribes living in a remote valley system in the Aurian mountain range. Fiercely independent, poor in resources and masters of guerilla warfare, the Dershan nation has largely been ignored after an initial assault and subsequent defeat in their territory by the Sweger Empire.

Herda: Currently occupied by the Empire of Sweger with a war raging across the valley which comprises the small Aurian range nation.

Hadrium(Imperial protectorate): A small Vestian-populated island nation playing a diplomatic game to avoid being absorbed by their larger neighbor to the south. Aligning with Sweger, they hope to keep their independence in the face of superior forces of Vestium and Aurian Empire, but it may be a lost game.

Golhafen(Imperial protectorate): Golhafen is a piece of the Empire of Sweger on the shores of the Aurian Ocean. The Golhafen colony as it is commonly called, holds the southern fleet of the Swegers and also a large army contigent much to the dismay of the Mainean Dynasty. One of the main reasons of the Dolskan invasion by the Swegers was to open a shorter path to the Golhafen colony across the Mainean bay instead of the long route east of Vestium and across the hostile waters of the Aurian Empire.

Republic of Auria: The Republic of Auria was born in the violent uprisings that also formed the Morlandian Monarchy(which is now split further). Being ethnically Aurian but having been influenced by the new ideas of republican statehood and ruling system, this small territory split from the Empire to form a more free society for Aurians. After the split of the Morlandian monarchy, they have been strongly allied to the Morlandian Republic to guarantee their independence.

Grand Duchy of Mejs: Technologically weak monarchical nation split from the Pyrrhan Empire, the Grand Duchy is held up by their defence pact with Dolska, which has forced them to send troops to aid the Dolskan land army in the campaign to defend their land against the Sweger invasion. Effectively an enemy to the Empire of Sweger.

Paceum: A small island nation in the Tempest ocean, populated by people of Vestian descent. They align themselves with Herland to guarantee their all-important sea trade routes.

Free State of Gruzja: A hub of banking industry, finance and commerce in the south, the Free State of Gruzja owes its continued independence to perhaps the best financial diplomacy on the continent. They keep a small army equipped with advanced Sweger armaments manned by Pichuan mercenaries, should they need to fend off any aggressions.

Free State of Pichua: One of the lesser nations born from the dissolution of the eastern Pyrrhan Empire. This matriarcal, fiercely independent island nation has had to fend off six landing invasions to its shores by the Mainean Dynasty and one from the Sweger Empire, all resulting in a resounding defeat for the aggressor. The island has never been allied to any other nation, instead relying on their indigenious fighting force and arms production industry. Their main exports include the famed Pichuan mercenary regiments, members of which have fought in nearly every conflict on the continent and serve currently as the royal guards to regents of both the Aurian and Morlandian states.
