Eastern Europe is dominated by the Commowealth of Independent Nations, a military and economic alliance established by the Democratic Federative Republic of Russia. The Commonwealth englobes most of non-communist Europe with a few exceptions, notably the nordic countries and Italy, which has remained non-aligned despite the successive leftist governments the country has had in the past few years. Russia, a liberal republic with an equally liberal capitalist economy, has risen in the past 60 years from a rural backwater to one of the World's most developed economies, having levels of industrial output and socio-economic expansion unprecedented. Under the presidencies of liberal Mikhail Tereschenko (1946-1951) and social democrat Pitrim Sorokin (1951-1955; 1955-1959) the russian middle class expanded greatly.
with the end of the war in the mid 1940s and the subsequent occupation of a great deal of Eastern Europe, the Russians decided to wall-off the communist threat with the creation of the C.I.N. The Commonwealth is quite a varied alliance in itself, from the authoritarian, conservative Kingdom of Yugoslavia to openly-socialist countries like Armenia.-
At the other side of the continent sits the British People's Socialist Republic, a socialist state that, despite attempting to spread socialism world-wide, does so outside of the Paris Pact, which finds itself at odds with this nation. This was not always the case, though, under the chairmanship of Harry Pollitt (1946-1954), Britain aligned itself with the nascent American bloc, being a founding member of the Paris Pact. That was until Pollitt was overthrown in a coup by a clique of radical communuists, led by Reginald Birch, who introduced new blood into the "reactionary" CPGB, purging oppositional within it, and launching a series of reforms airming to make Britain not only a distinct socialist nation, apparting itself from the American "social-imperialists" but also to make it the bearer of the torch of communism throughout the world. The formerly-largest empire to ever exist was now pursuing an anti-imperialist agenda, funding third-world communist and socialist movements. "Reg birch thought" ,as it was called, became a new ideological contender in the cold war, opposed to both the more traditional American communist ideology and the capitalist system of the Russians.
the West-East divide can be easily noticed in Germany: one nation, governed by two opposing systems. Chancellor August Bach of East Germany has vowed to iniate talks with the westerners, and some mild warmup of relations can be noticed, though it will take several decades for the Germany to even come close to unification.
