Description UPDATE: 2/21/2018

Thank you for all the kind messages, guys.
Some were supportive, and others provided very honest, harsh advice.
Both helped tremendously.

After giving it some time, calming down, and sleeping on it:
I've decided not to delete anything.

Why?
Two main reasons:

1.) The feeling of "a fresh new start" only lasts for like, two days...
My art problems will still be there, even after deleting everything.
But now, even worse, I'll have an EMPTY gallery, which will make me feel even more shitty.

2.) If my watchers don't like the new stuff I draw, they can leave.
I'm just gonna have to accept that.

Heck, some watchers leave BECAUSE the artist draws the SAME THING, over and over!
I can't please everyone.

I've struggled with this issue, like 5 or 6 times already.

But the one thing I did differently this time was actually drawing something to announce that I'll be deleting my gallery. I'm glad that I drew something to remember this moment, and all the fantastic advice I'd gotten in the comments.

Now the next time I feel like deleting stuff again,
I can just look back here and give myself a much-needed reality slap.

Thanks, everyone!
- Pepper.

Do you ever just feel like deleting your entire dA gallery and starting all over?

Well, that's how I felt today...

That's why I drew this...

Was gonna post this and delete everything I'd ever drawn prior to this point...

But... for some reason,
at the last second,
I couldn't do it?

Maybe it's because I realized that deleting everything won't help me get motivated to draw new stuff?
Or will it? Or should I just bite the bullet and do it?
Has my gallery gotten too big for me to manage it? or something?
Not sure...

To my watchers:

Calm down, I'm not gonna delete anything YET.
but I might have to make some kind of change to my gallery...

Just been frustrated recently, struggling to create new artwork.
If I draw anything different/new, I'm scared that no one's going to like it or I'm going to lose watchers...
Just not sure of anything right now.... ughhhhhhh....

I relate to this since I've not only deleted my old stuff but also my entire account(s) . I deeply regret having done this. As you pointed out it didn't solve anything. To this day I'm still not proud of some drawings that are public, these feelings didn't go away, deleting everything didn't make me better. It's pretty normal to look harshly at your own old art, but sometimes what is good to remember is that someone's gonna like what you made months ago even if you don't share the same feelings anymore. Noticing flaws in the first place is a sign that your eye got sharper and that can get you forward.
I hope you feel better soon ;u;b

YES, THIS. I need to remember this.
One of those "invisible truths" that hits artists when they're at a low-point.
I actually remember seeing a tutorial about this phenomenon somewhere on dA...

Yup! I've deleted a few pieces in the past before, only to regret it.
Also didn't experience any "motivation" magically pop up as a result.

Thank you so much for the support and for sharing your experiences too!

Just make a new subgallery, and call it "old stuff" and put everything in there. Practically making your main gallery empty, after that you can upload all your new things in the empty main gallery.

Good call.
I already have a folder called "old stuff," where I do just that.

Ehh, maybe I'll make another one, called "even older stuff" or "everything before 2018" or something.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Jeez, good. Cause if you did delete your account, I wouldn't know what to do.

But seriously, I've had this thought go through my head alot for my account but I just couldn't make myself do it. There's work I've done that does do well and then there's ones that just falls on it's face but that just tells you to keep drawing to top the last one. And yes, creating new artwork is just a huge hassle and you never really know what it's gonna be. Is it going to be a new character or gift art or trade or commission, it gets exhausting. But hell, I think that's what makes it fun. Keep being you, darling and I hope the new changes doesn't change your style.

Thanks, Lex.
Really helps to know that I'm not the only one to think this.

This is like the 5th or 6th this happened to me..
But each time, I just can't bring myself to do it, at the last moment.

As others have pointed out: deleting won't solve anything.
My art problems will still be there;
But now, I'll have an EMPTY gallery too, making me feel even worse.

Can't guarantee I'll keep my current art style, though.
Cutesy anime girls are fun and all, but I need continue to grow as an artist, try out different styles, ya know?

I totally get you and it's true that your gallery would just be an empty graveyard if you delete everything.
Plus your art has done nothing but inspire me to draw the why you do at times like your awesome backgrounds
and character designs and let's not forget about Gertie. I don't know about you but I love your style. Trust
me I have days where I hate my work and think people done enjoy my stuff because it's not edgy enough
or in shorter terms, not nsfw but that still doesn't stop me from pumping out drawings just like how it should be for you.

I'd hate to see all your work go away, it never hurts to have something to see where you've come from and where you're going. Never feel like you're going to disappoint people if you're pushing your art & trying new things. We just want to see you succeed & create what you want to create! <3

Thank you for this.
I just have to remember, there will always be like-minded artists and watchers out there.

I mean, I can't be the ONLY one who likes
cutesy anime girl art AND scifi concept art AND fantasy character designs AND figure drawing studies, right???

If not, then I'll be the proud one and only! Haha.
But for real, I can't please everyone;
I need to learn to accept this.

Thank you very much for the kind words and support!

You're super welcome, I love ALL of your work and I'm always happy to see it come across my dash! (even if I'm quiet a lot of the time, hehe)

I always figure even if someone isn't into all the stuff you do, they can appreciate parts of your work & process as we all push & try to get better! Plus the ones that are into all of it are just rolling around with stars in their eyes, haha!

Keep up the good fight my friend!

Been there before bout 3 times infact with deleting everything and starting over but it never really changes much it seems just end up in the same cycle of trying to improve over n over and not feelin' like its good enough.

Guess the best way to go is to think fudge it and post anything you do, ya could end up gaining more than you think from it and maybe it'll help with motivation from exposure.

Nothing kills creativity more than fear.

deleting everything and starting over but it never really changes

Thank you for pointing this out.
Yeah, this is like the 5th or 6th time I've felt like this since joining dA.
Must be a cycle, or just something artists commonly go through.

The feeling of "a fresh new start" only lasts for like, two days...
My art problems will still be there, even after deleting everything.
But now, even worse, I'll an EMPTY gallery, which will make me feel even more shitty.

Yeah, I just need to stop caring so much about gaining/losing watchers.
Usually, I really don't give a fuck: I draw what I like, and then like-minded people will come.

If my current watchers don't like the new stuff I draw, they'll just quietly leave;
Honestly, I probably won't even gonna notice they're gone.
Guess I just had a moment of poor judgement or something.

Seriously, good call.
Thanks for snapping me back to reality.

No problem plus if people leave cuz of your new art direction then they ain't worth worrying about, I used to keep trying to appeal to people but in the end it just makes drawing so dull n a chore still in the middle of trying to get back to drawing stuff I wanna but old habits n such.

Also I'd recommend a book called "The Subtle Art of not giving a f*ck" it's a pretty good book and puts a lot into perspective.

Hmmm... I'm pretty judicious about deleting stuff. Sometimes I'll come across a sketch particularly egregious. If I can fix it I will, but ever so once in awhile, I'll just blast it. But I like having a record of where I've been so I know where I'm going. ^_^;;

.ps If you delete the Ryu-chan and Xara sketch, I'll cry.

alot people wont actually leave just because the creator is experimenting but is always good to tell them before you make changes so they know what going on, you should look at other artist to get expired by them and branch out to new forbidden areas you have yet to explore. by the way this character i made  is base off Gertie

PEPPERTODE In reply to yoshizuyuner [2018-02-21 14:46:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the advice.
I already have some concept art/figure drawings in my gallery, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to my watchers when I try to do more of that stuff... But cutesy anime girl art is the main reason why ppl decide to watch me (and it's the stuff I draw most often), so that's what people come to expect of me, I guess...

Either way, I gotta accept the fact that I can't please everyone.
That kind of mentality is not healthy.

Aww, she's precious.
Very cute! Thanks for sharing!

Thx for the heads-up! Would it be ok if i went through the gallery and downloaded my faves? I completely know the feeling, so be completely sure you have copies of everything before you do, just in case you realize you want to re-post anything.

Not losing me, thats for sure! Unless you block me (yeah....not my finest moment).
Love it whenever i see your stuff in my watch feed. You do you. If you’re not feelin it, ‘das alright. I honestly only find art enjoyable when life seems to be going ok. It just takes too much time otherwise.

And as to the number of watchers you have. Sure it’s great to get lots o’love, but as soon as you feel OBLIGATED to make illustrations you’re only adding more negativity into your life that detracts from anything you’ll create. Because, bottom line; if you dont like your work, we have no reason to either. And i love your work, so there!

Sorry for the e-mail long comment. But im not the only one who wants to help cheer you up, as much as total strangers from who-knows-where can. Anyway, please keep doing things that make you happy, but never assume that you always have to be.

Cheers to new starts and beer farts!

Hopefully I was able to save you from going on a downloading rampage.
(haha, I do that too. They're a pain in the butt.)

Because, bottom line; if you dont like your work, we have no reason to either.
Holy shit, that one got to me.

I'd much rather see an artist creating what they really love, (even if I don't like their art style or the subject matter they choose), instead of someone who is doing a half-assed job, clearly doesn't care about their creations, only creating something in the hopes that others will like it.

I shouldn't expect anything less from my watchers or myself.
That's not fair to anyone.
Some good food for thought there.

Thank you for the support!

I understand the need to start fresh, but your watchers love your work; I'm one of them. Plus, it also helps to keep old art, to show how far you've come.
I've posted art on here that I'm not proud of, yet they're still here. There to remind myself to keep moving forward; to improve my drawing abilities.
Please don't delete them. I value your art (especially of Gertie), and so do your watchers.
It's okay if you want to change a few things, and I'll be happy to see what you come up with next!

Thank you very much.
I just like having that clean, blank slate;
A brand-new, fresh start, if you will.

I wanna do more serious artwork like this.
But I'm having so much trouble getting motivated, or working on a sketch for more than 10 minutes or so, before I get frustrated and throw it out...

I'm not sure why...
Is it because I'm getting bogged down with all my past work?
Do I really just want a fresh, new start?

I mainly get watchers for my past work (cutesy anime girl stuff).
Sometimes I just wanna delete all that because I don't wanna disappoint anyone...
(that I don't draw that stuff as much anymore, or I wanna draw different things.)

I'll still draw Gertie sometimes (I love her too much, and its fun!)
but I wanna switch gears now and then,
I need to grow as an artist, ya know?

Interesting, I can see what you mean.

I know what you mean, I've been working on a commission for the past 3 months and I've barely started it. My WIP folder has about 100 plus projects in it. I wish I had some words of advice, but I'm just as lost as you are I'm afraid. All I can say is that you have done a damn fine job so far.

Maybe "restarting" is your way of moving past your old projects. Or perhaps something more, I can't say for certain.

I get that sometimes. As I change and develop new styles people flock to my older stuff and take issue with my newer work. As much as I want to keep everyone happy I want to change my art to appeal to me most of all.
