My friend recently reminded me of three background lionesses who appear in one of the more recent TLK books, ‘A Dark and Scar-y Night.’ While I take the books and comics to be only semi-canon, I am very fond of unique-looking background characters and try to use them in my headcanon as much as I can. Sadly, I had absolutely no place for these ladies in Mufasa’s pride... and then I thought, hey, there’s three unknown ladies, and there’s three unknown gentlemen in ‘Simba Wants to Play’—

So! Here’s my absolute least important headcanon yet In order:

Alwadi and Ishirini: Alwadi is the queen of the Khazimla Canyons, a kingdom beyond the termite-mound portion of the Outlands. Ishirini is the youngest brother of Bahari and Ruka, betrothed to Alwadi when they were teenagers.

Being the ruler of a kingdom that bordered several hostile territories including the Outlands, Alwadi is something of a warrior queen. As well as fending off poachers she’s lead the charge in a couple of full-on wars, and has gained a reputation being—for lack of a better word—kind of a badass. Alwadi can’t help but love that she has this standing among the animals, and has grown to be rather proud and boasting due to it. That said, she’s a confident, kind, very extroverted lioness, who only really exerts her power when the situation calls for it. Ishirini, being a very pretty lion who’s on the small side, is often assumed to be just a trophy husband, and tends to be overlooked by the kingdom’s enemies and even allies. This is exactly how he likes it—underneath the demure nature, Ishirini is a trained soldier with a sharp mind, and no qualms about getting his paws dirty. This is because he was expected to join his birth pride’s Royal Guard initially, before he ended up betrothed away, and was trained as such. Together, he and Alwadi make quite the powerful pair.

Bahari and Mvua: Bahari is the king of the Riverlands, a kingdom just beyond the Elephant Graveyard portion of the Outlands. Mvua was born in the same pride, and betrothed to him when they were cubs.

Bahari is a very peaceful king, with no appetite for violence. He strives to keep his kingdom allied with those which surround it, be it through betrothals, peace treaties, or both, and tries to make frequent visits to Pridelands, keeping a strong connection with his friend Mufasa. Though he is a gentle lion, it should not be said that Bahari can’t hold his own if he has to—but he believes that violence must always be a last resort. Mvua is similar to her husband, being a reserved and diplomatic lioness who prefers talking to fighting. However, she has a mischievous streak that he doesn’t, being the more carefree and playful of the pair who’s always ready to help the kids get into trouble. But the queen is still quite able to put on a stern face and keep the kingdom in line, when she needs to.

Ruka and Msamaha: Ruka is Bahari’s younger twin brother, and the leader of the Riverlands’ Royal Guard. Msamaha is the little sister of Mvua, and she and Ruka fell in love independently (their kids are double-cousins with Bahari and Mvua‘s!)

Ruka is for the most part your average Guard: straightforward, approachable, and good-mannered, but still assertive. He’s a disciplined but idealistic fellow, who is happy to support his brother as they strive or peace and alliance with the surrounding kingdoms. He does have an irritable side when it comes to animals who poach from his land on multiple occasions, and can be a little harsh with his Guard, tolerating absolutely no in-fighting. In contrast to her bold husband, Msamaha is a gentle, shy lioness, who can’t help but fret over Ruka with his dangerous job—that said, his bravery is what she loves most about him, she just can’t help being a little fussy over her dear Guard. She’s motherly and a homebody, who’s patience and kindness makes her the Riverlands’ go-to cubsitter.
