I agree with you! Actually to be more specific , if you simply unistall the game it will always remember the progresses, you have to erase all save files in the folders. It's so hard to avoid consequences.. Btw, This is the part I love the most about UT, lately I've been studying more the genocide and pacifist scenes, I came up with atheory that explains all the doubts about how the power is split between the player, Frisk and Chara. In conclusion, the two kids are just the last innocent victims of the player's will, and the sad part is that they don't even know it.

I get your point too, but I think the player in the story is Frisk. Now you wonder "why can't the player be Chara and so Chara possesses Frisk?" or "Why can't the player control Frisk in pacifist and Chara in genocide?", which is a theory, with many issues, but some people believe it. It's simple, you see the main reason why people think that Chara is evil is that, during genocide, when you kill absolutely everyone, in the ruins mirror it says "it's me, Chara" in white text, while in pacifist, it says "it's you, frisk!" always in white text. And then, at the end of genocide, in front of the new home's mirror it says the exacly same thing but in red. This is for many people the proof that Chara is controlling Frisk, but there are issues I want to talk you about. (not to mention that Chara saying "it's me, Chara" in white text is the proof that they are the narrator- they talk in first person for them, in second for Frisk. But I won't talk about that theory now, I want to focus on something else).
a) The one Chara talks about is NOT the person we are seeing in the mirror. "Why?", you ask. Because the one you see in the mirror is Frisk, both in the ruins and new home, they don't have Chara's face reflected in the mirror , which would have made it much more clear. You have to notice that in neutral they always say "It's you!". Chara doesn't refer to the person reflected anymore, but refers to themself. Why? because not only the more LV rises, they more they get close to become phisical( and at the same time evil- for the LV. In fact I don't deny that they are evil when the LV is high, but this is just them becoming corrupted. Some people think Chara wasn't ok with genocide, but I don't approve this theory at all. Chara is okay with whatever you do and learns, but in genocide they don't kill "for fun", like we do, they kill "for power". At first, the LV with their name is 1, which shows they never hurted a thing in life and they are actually a, if not good, normal person) So the more they get phisical and mean, the more they become selfish and negative. Looking in the mirror, they don't care about Frisk anymore, they only care about themself. Ehy, note, no innocent crying child, nether Chara or Frisk is a scared innocent child in geno, they both mean to kill but for different purposes. Chara at the end of second genocide says they don't really understand Frisk, because Frisk kills for fun and eventually wants to go back at the beginning over and over again, as if nothing ever happened, while Chara kills for power and thinks this is right in genocide. 
b) at the end of genocide, Chara shows up, right? people think that they took complete control of Frisk's body and they are now possessing it, and they show up in front of the player. Well, I don't think so, the reason is that Chara is, yes, showing up, but not in Frisk's body, in fact it would have made sense only if they had still Frisk's clothes. It may look like a stupid detail, but it's important, because it means that what we are seeing is not Chara possessing Frisk, but Chara beeing so much powerful because of LV that they can actually show up on their own, just like a ghost. Besides this agrees with your theory, and it means that Chara is actually talking to FRISK, because I remind you that when we see them we are still inside of the battle space, even though chara is shown as overworld sprite (but it may be a style choice) because everything is black around BEFORE chara destroys the world. This is not a very relevant detail, but I think that Chara is actually talking to US; but us in game is Frisk, because we are seeing everything from their point of view during every single battle. 
c) All of the above, you may say, are just theories and not facts, but here's an example that shows the one fighting is NOT Chara. genocide, Sans's battle. At some point there is  red text, which no one denies it is Chara (even white text is, but people just ignore it. the red text is something that other NPC's use, too, and it's used for ex. by Toriel to says something very emotionally strong or violent. Notice that they use it when they are at LV 19, I think the violence is high enough. Besides LV makes a person become "distant from themself", the highter it is, the easier it is to kill, the more you become emotionless.) As I was saying, the red text says "keep dodging". Dodging is a phisical action, and Chara is telling somebody to dodge. That "somebody is Frisk/the player moving them". They are not controlling Frisk, they are telling them what to do, but Frisk can still decide to go back aat this point, they are not forced to do anything by Chara. Chara kills Sans. yes, you heard me, Chara literally kills Sans. Killing him is an action the player does not gives the imput to be done, which prooves that it's Chara doing it, and also prooves that Chara never killed anyone by themselfs before. Frisk walks through the throne room. Chara hits Asgore, and FLOWEY finishes him off. Now, Flowey starts begging with Asriel's face. "Chara is an horrible person because they killed their own brother while he was begging them", you may say. Well, the fact is, that Chara doesn't kill Flowey on their own as they do for Sans and Asgore. There is a long istant of silence, enough for Frisk to understand that THEY have to press ENTER this time, they have to press fight. It is shocking, but Chara stopped, they have a moment of doubt, it's like if they are asking Frisk "Are we sure about this?" after hearing Flowey begging with Asriel's voice. If Frisk stops, at this point they can still reset. If they give the imput, Chara kills him. I basically told you everything Chara did and everything Frisk did.

Sorry this was actually very long, there is a lot to say, I know you won't change your mind about it, but here are some prooves I think are valid. I have so much more, but this is already too much long.
