PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL
β€œHow to extract Line art and place it on a new layer”

This is a tutorial made for some friends of mine who asked me how to extract their line art from the background and put it on a new, transparent layer, so that they can colour it.

I hope you guys like it. Give it a go and tell me if you succeeded and... If not... Tell me why? Help to make improve this tutorial if needed.

very helpful
just what I was searching for, thanks so much spent days searching for this

In the beginning it was very confusing with both the shortcuts and menuclicking in the same tutorial, but once I understood that, it got a lot easier. It gives a chance to use the shortcuts or the slow method depending on what ppl want, plus one can check if in doubt if the result is the same.

Faving this so I always know where to get it

^Oh and I forgot to add that I also appreciate the fact that you explained in detail, for example, if one way didn't work, there was another way, the other tutorials did not do that. Thanks again!

Thank you so much! You are my hero! I tried this and I was very successful. I was trying to follow other tutorials but always got stuck. I've been going from tutorial to tutorial in confusion until I came upon yours. I am a traditional artist and I am not tech savvy at all, I just got a mac this week, never had one before. Thank you so much. Now to learn how to use the layers and brushes for coloring...I hope I'll be okay.

There are few times that you will find me following a tutorial step by step...this was one of those few times.

This was a really good tutorial and I really enjoyed going through it step by step to see where you were leading me. I also enjoyed the part about cleaning up line art.

Thank you. I'm glad you found it helpful. My goal was not only to teach how to get a nice clean linenart, but also to gain some knowledge of photoshop's user interface and tools. I hope I have some success in that. Be well.

Question-- can this be done without channels? I don't know if my program has it D:

Pericles In reply to xXFishzRevengeXx [2010-02-25 10:08:08 +0000 UTC]

No, not really. Sorry. You need channels to do it.

I was following very well until step 5. I have photoshop elements 6.0 and for the life of me I can not find a channels tab anywhere! Im pulling my hair out! lol. Its not in windows and its not with layers. Do you know if I even have it at all with elements 6.0?

For some reason I always get stuck on step 6. :\

If I try to select the background layer, but it refuses. Once it IS selected, the RBG, Red, Green and Blue channels are selected, but not the blue copy.

Did I miss something? :\

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pericles In reply to AiShowa [2009-07-23 11:44:30 +0000 UTC]

The blue copy doesn't need to be selected. And it does not have anything to do with the colours. Go back to the layers tab. There is where you have to go. Try to complete the whole process and I think that everything will go just fine.

I have Photoshop Elements 6.0 and it didn't work for me. I don't have anything remotely close to a channels window, or a mask tool from what I can see. =/ This makes it very hard for me to follow any of the tutorials I find on dA. Dx Do you know of any that don't require a mask or channel?

That's weird. Photoshop 6 has channels --I can swear! Excpet if it's a special -limited functions- version, of which I do not know how to help. Sorry.
