PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL
β€œHow to extract Line art and place it on a new layer”

This is a tutorial made for some friends of mine who asked me how to extract their line art from the background and put it on a new, transparent layer, so that they can colour it.

I hope you guys like it. Give it a go and tell me if you succeeded and... If not... Tell me why? Help to make improve this tutorial if needed.

Go to menu and do: "window" --> "Channels"

If the "Channels" isn't there, then the Photoshop you've got is not full version.

Well, I was good up until step 5. PS Elements doesn't have channels. DX

I have to admit that I've never used PS Elements... I dunno how to solve this problem. I think that this tutorial "Coloring technique " by "*yuni " might help you since it doesn't use channels.

Give it a go and tell me if it helped.

In the end, the FAQ helped me more than the tutorial. I wasn't really looking for a coloring technique, but that thing in the artist's comments about setting the lineart as a brush. Geez, I can't believe I never thought of that. D:

Now, this is cool how you did this, and I'm NOT trying to be a jerk.

But it'd probably be easier if you just stopped at step 3, set the Lines layer to "Multiply" and just painted under it.

this really does work..! i tried it on a pic of mine.. it didn't come out as clean and crisp as yours.. but that was because the sketch was really sloppy. xP

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

StevenLeonCooper In reply to Chickengirl [2008-04-03 10:34:56 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes when your sketches are too sloppy, you can do the following:

Duplicate your lines so you don't screw up the originals.

Apply a Gaussian blur to them (Just so that they're visibly a little blurry, nothing extreme but you need to be able to see the blurriness).

Now, Use the burn tool set to "Shadows" and the Dodge tool set to "Highlights" to take away the blur and clean the lines.

(The burn tool looks like a weird hand and the dodge tool looks kinda like a magnifying glass. They're where the Sponge tool is)

A few times, and you'll become an expert. It's a really good way to get lineart. I hope it helps you create lots of supah-dupah nice pictures.

I do it slightly different. After I've created the new blue channel, I go to select-load selection and choose blue copy but check the invert button. Then I create 2 new layers, one for the white and one for the lineart. After that I make both foreground and background colors black and do the gradient tool to put in the lineart, then with the paint bucket make the other layer white.

It's pretty much the same, just with a few lil variances. It seems like a lot of work, but once you have it down it takes less than a minute. When I posted a tut like this way back when I had nothing but people just tell me they used multiply and that was it. Kind of a cheap way, especially since you can't really do anything with the lineart after that, like coloring it or manipulating it. I didn't know what the buttons in image 27 meant, thanks, I'll have to use that from now on.

Pericles In reply to renonevada [2005-07-26 07:18:40 +0000 UTC]

I tried out what you said. It looks quite the same with small variations at the end.
I agree with you. Trying to toy with the layer's modes is easy but you can really manipulate the lineart. I preffer my way of doing so I can do with the lineart whatever I like. Although it might look a bit complicated to begginers, once you've learned it comes natural and in a few minutes.

I'm glad that even in the last picture you found something new and interesting in my tutorial. That made me happy. Thanks for commenting and sharring your way of doing it.

Awesome. Too bad for shading freaks/messy sketchers like me, It's near impossible to extract the lineart. But It looks useful for normal people!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

StevenLeonCooper In reply to paellamagi [2008-04-03 10:36:46 +0000 UTC]

If this method doesn't work, try just setting the blending mode of your lines to "Multiply" and painting underneath it.

You may also want to invest in a Digital Tablet so you can go over your lines on the computer. They're tricky to get used to though! Be warned!

StevenLeonCooper In reply to bart-kun [2008-04-03 10:39:32 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop can act funny for numerous reasons:

1. You have CS3. I dunno who decided that CS3 should crash every 2 seconds but I've yet to see it work stably on any computer.

2. You've had it installed for a few years. I dunno what causes it but after a while photoshop CS2 will start using a lot more resources than normal. Re-installing sometimes helps.

3. Wonky Settings: If you've accidentally changed settings you may have weird things happening. Unfortunately photoshop doesn't make it a piece of cake to reset things. Just re-install.
