Description After playing STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl (and actually, the whole STALKER series) about 20 times, i'd finally decided the VSS wasn't as ugly as I first thought it was, and thought i'd make one for CS or whatever HL/HL2 mod anyone was playing at the time (though it's never been released for anything).

~6000 triangles, on 4-5 512x512 and 1024x256 maps (just diffuse).

I should mention the wood texture was done by a certain genius by the name of Rosa Jonas (which i'd tweaked a little, but the magic remains).

Looks amazing man, really. Do you still have this model+textures?

Sorry for the slow reply, only just checked back after ages. Yes, still got all the files for it, though recently I started redoing certain parts of the texture since I felt i've improved enough since then to make a difference to it. I quite like how some bits turned out so half of it'll stay mostly the same, but some parts could definitely benefit.

Sorry again for the delay

Would you mind sharing this with me for a mod project? In CryEngine3? If not, I don't mind

As much as i'd like to (thanks for the offer, by the way), i'd rather not, sorry. Used to make lots of stuff and share it with the Counterstrike/Half-Life modding community, but had a few incidents where people stole/sold my work while claiming credit for it (and a weird one where someone tried to replicate one of my models poly-by-poly just to be able to 'legitimately' claim credit for it), and i've got enough on my mind currently without having to worry about what's happening to any models i've got out there.

Crazy needlessly long answer! But yeah, not to say I don't trust you, but other people with your mod could easily take the model, and that kind of thing. Hope you're not offended :]

I'm not, I also share the same vision. I create my own textures etc. and I've had more than enough incidents leading me to just make them for personal use and improve over time.

But, if you'd like to know which mod: [link]

I'm the lead designer with another guy named Nicolai. We announced a huge weapons project, which got cancelled due to personal problems of one of our members. So, I'm asking around dA and Polycount/NGHS and CGSociety for some LP or HP models for our animators.

And again, I totally get you Cheers! And I'm looking forward to the next version, if you'll post it ofc ^^

You've tempted me with the whole STALKER thing, ooh. Haha. Not sure if I have time to be able to, though

However, that FAL on the mod's site looks oddly familiar, I made one a few years ago that got released on a popular modding website for various Counterstrike weapons. I don't throw accusations around normally, but apart from the grenade launcher, i'm almost certain that's my model, down to the geometry of certain parts (and inaccuracies/mistakes i'd made on it). It's an Israeli LB FAL, by the way, one that i'd modelled alongside several FAL variants so they could be modular.

Here's some (old, from 2007 or so, and I have max files from earlier proving the model's mine) images of mine that hopefully show what i'm saying. I'll show you a UV map too, since they're impossible to accidentally replicate, and i'd like to request that the guy who claims to have made your FAL model show his FAL's main texture map.

[link] - my model, textured by Heretic. seems just about identical. in his render there's a couple untextured parts (you can see them) and the carry handle's been hidden (which sadly was one of the giveaway parts, hah).

[link] - the reciever UV map. i've changed it ever so slightly since i'd released the model to the public, but the vast majority of it should be identical, if your artist's taken my model.

Would appreciate if you cleared things up for me on this, i'm just asking for one or two of the model's UV maps (get him to watermark them if he's unsure), there should be several UV maps for it, since like I said the model was meant to be modular. Thanks!

Hang on - I might've just misunderstood, but all of the models ([link] ) appear to be ones taken from other people, not original models. There's ones from Metro 2033, other STALKER games, (possibly) my Skorpion model, a guy called 'Darkstorn's Galil model, allsorts, mainly models that people've made for Counterstrike. Are the models credited, at least?

Reading through the comments, it turns out somewhere along the line someone was too lazy to write in some simple credits, so my FAL's just floating around various mods and sites as "the FAL from the AMK mod", for example (I don't remember even being asked about the model being put in a mod). I remember seeing it in a STALKER mod too that I played (and was sad to see that someone had accidentally autosmoothed the model, screwing the lighting on it, and again, went without as much as crediting me for use of a model i'd spent months on. This is why I quit releasing stuff :\ Months of work just goes wasted on people who couldn't care less about showing any respect to the artist, by either showing their name on the model's render, or in the credits, or asking before they put they use the model in their mod.

(apologies for rantyness - i'm tired and haven't eaten anything today (it's 3pm, been up since early morning), so i'm a bit cranky. but still, rarrrg)

Oh and, I notified Nicolai as well, he might be reading this on this very moment.

Ill prepare an article which covers most of the lack of crediting and ill make it my personal project to search for the rightfull owners of these weapons.

Again, I'm glad i bumped into you. You deserve the credit, mostly because this FN-FAL is the most loved model of the whole mod

Yeah, i totally get it, didnt saw these replies as they arent replies to me.

Ill make sure all models are properly credited! Im really hammering on the crediting in my modding group. Im glad i found you! The internet really is a small place!

Notifying the group as well, ill tell them to (if they have, get, or copy/take) search for the right owner.

And yes... the russian community...they really lack in crediting, some even claim to have made this. i've dealt with one in my team and immediately kicked him out :\ (BioShocker in the comments)

Again, I'm sincerely sorry. I completely understand the rage. That's why i dont share my models with others I'm just making stuff for personal use in screenshots and or promotional stuff in the hope to throw them in a portfolio once to get a job somewhere

That w0od texture lo0ks great! Judging by the gameplay videos I've seen on YouTube, most STALKER players prefer the Vintorez over the Val. In the Oblivion Lost mod, the Val has 2/3rds the hitpower as the Vintorez which makes no sense.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pete-c-89 In reply to IggyHazard [2010-08-05 00:20:35 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it makes sense for balance reasons, otherwise you could just stick a scope on the Val and you'd have twice the mag size as the VSS with everything else the same, so there's got to be some tradeoffs. Or you could stick the 20 round mag in the VSS, hah. I don't really think there's any real difference apart from the stocks?

IggyHazard In reply to pete-c-89 [2010-08-08 00:33:56 +0000 UTC]

In the Oblivion Lost mod, you can mount a PSO-1 scope on a standard Val. In unmodded ShoC, there was a special Val that could accept a PSO-1. It was a reward for a mission you can do for Voronin. OLP jacked up the Vintorez in ObLost, though. It has an improved scope, so that alone differentiates it from a scoped Val, but it also has better hitpower and uses 30-round mags. What I find most insulting is the 30-round mags because they still lo0k like 10-rounders. They also jacked over the OC-14 Groza by making the mags hold 30 rounds even though they still lo0k like 20-rounders.

Very good job.
The Vintorez is my favorite weapon since I began playin SoC, and this is the best recreation I've seen of it. The details are incredible.

Hey thanks :]

Yeah I like adding all the details I can find on reference pictures (even weird stuff like the welds connecting the front sight to the barrel, that was fun to do).

Been trying to figure out how to get it ingame, I know it's possible.

Alpana-SH In reply to pete-c-89 [2010-07-22 11:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is possible, but I don't know how.
Look for in any forum about the games, they must have a section about modding.

Yeah. I'd found a tutorial probably about a year ago but just never got round to following it through. I used to put hundreds of models in Half-Life 1 and 2 but just don't bother anymore.
