Han's gun was built on a Mauser. In fact, if you look on Youtube, you can find a video of Adam Savage building an exact prop replica of Han's gun.

(There were actually several variations, since Han's original was built on a real gun and was impossible for them to import into California for filming the sequel.)

The original was in England. Importing firearms into the US is a very regulation-heavy process. Much cheaper and faster to make a new fake one.

Now THAT is a gun. I've had the pleasure of seeing this with the stock attached in a private gun collection, and damn but this gun rocks. xD

The C/96 is my favorite self-loading pistol of all time. Arguably one of the best guns of the last two centuries.

I have the "Bolo" model, with the 4" barrel, converted to 9mm. The stock is a cheap Chinese version, with pot-metal fittings.

Cool stuff. The C96 is a bit weird isn't it... clip fed, and the crazy stock. Surely a stock goes against most of what pistols are good for? Though I hear there was an automatic version of this, which would probably need a stock.

The C96 converted to a carbine which is what the stock was for.

Back in the 50's you could get a pair of grips like this for it:

The Mauser 96 was designed as sort of an early "weapons system", where the pistol could be used as a carbine if long range shooting was required.
The .30 caliber model had sights calibrated to 1000 meters(!), and the 9mm to 500 meters. Both were extremely optimistic and the notch in the rear sight is very small. 100 meters was probably the maximum.
