The United States had been thrown into chaos after the results of Operation Chestburster by the Patriot Front Conspiracy within the US Army and Marine Corps. The state of Minnesota, up until mid-2037, had remained largely neutral, maintaining their borders against incursions and settling unrest within their own borders. Wisconsin's federal government, however would be spurned into action under the urging of their own citizens. Minnesota, declaring themselves a pseudo-legitimist in cooperation with the newly-declared US Emergency Government in Philadelphia. Minnesota would form alliances with Michigan and Wisconsin's governments around this time and offer aid to their neighbors. Military assets were seized, and training was afforded to citizens. With this in mind, and an interrim capitol in St. Paul, The Great Lakes Confederation was officially declared as a political entity in 2038, four years into the Dissolution Wars. After securing their own domestic threats and defending their borders, they'd begun to push their way southwards into the battlefields in Ohio, Indiana Iowa and Illinois. Their interim capitol was moved to Chicago in May of 2039. More military assets were siezed, and foreign aid was offered to the Great Lakes Federation and their allied autocephalous juntas (ACJs) by Somali militants in Somaliland and Puntland-- in turn for recognizing Somaliland's sovereignty from the rest of Somalia, in the case of the former. Somali commandos offered up their aid for the GLC, forming the country's first Foreign Legion. By this point as well, the ACJs would have been fully absorbed into the Confederations' military as different task-force battalions, rather than simply warlords being held as vassal to the GLC.
In 2042, the Canadian province of Ontario would be welcomed into the Great Lakes Confederation of their own free will, a year and a half after Canada's collapse, aiding in raids into Manitoba and pushing eastward into the Erie Stretch and against the Appalachian National Army. This was especially after Ontarian and GLC forces had worked together during the Siege of Fort Soosain, which was built upon the ruins of Sault St. Marie, by a force of Canadian-American alt-right militias. The city was renamed to Rosenthal in 2046, when the region started to rebuilt. The tentative peace between the US Emergency Government in Philadelphia would eventually turn into a solid alliance, after the Philadelphia Government signed for peace with the Alliance for Southern Harmony-- which would later become the Republic of Kingsland. This alliance, along with New England, would form the earliest diplomatic foundations for the Laurentia Pact. This soured relations between these and the US claimants in the Great Plains and Rockies. By 2042's end, the Philadelphia Government would declare that they no longer desired to take back the entire United States, and would be satisfied with what it could maintain now. Now re-christened as the North Atlantic Republic, it would also take in the island of Bermuda amidst the rising conflict in England after the collapse of the UK.
In June 2044, the GLC would declare themselves in support of the reborn Sioux Federation, helping them solidify their borders and offering funding toward reclamation efforts. This would include supplying military weapons and supplies.
In December 2045, the city of Chicago would be subject to a horrid fire after a power-plant explosion, and the interim capital had to be moved to Madison, Wisconsin.
When a general peace was achieved by the Great Lakes Federation in the late 2040s, the various military occupation zones were turned into "assisted intendencies" by the federal government, which would later be inducted into the Great Lakes Federation as proper states. Chicago, Erie, Keewatin, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Upper Missouri by order of admittance. Chicago was technically admitted twice, the fires and population displacement had been so bad that it cost Chicago their entire statehood within the GLC for about five years. Upon it's readmission, for a time, the city of Chicago was the official capitol of the Confederation, up until 2081 when it was moved to Rosenthal, which had been designated as a special district, in order to ensure no one state became too powerful-- the same logical motivations behind forming Washington DC in the old USA.
Following the fully-realized peace in their nation, the need to rebuild brought opportunity from abroad. Many Brazilian migrants would be integral to the reconstruction of the cities of Cincinnati and Detroit, and Somali migrants in multiple waves due to the various religious wars as part of the African Warlord Period, and then the Aden Propaganda War moving into the 2080s, would become so largely influential on the population and culture that Somali would be declared the third official language of the GLC in 2091, after Spanish and English.
The modern borders of these provinces were due to the various war efforts in those regions re-shaping the environment, as well as due to how the former USA states' borders were affected.
The economic and population boom in the 26 years since they'd achieved complete peace was such that the GLC went from among the poorest to among the richest and most powerful nations in North America; nevermind being the most politically progressive. The Confederation spearheaded the formation of the Laurentine Pact, which besides themselves consisted of the nations of the North Atlantic Republic, New England, Quebec, and the Republic of Newfoundland and Labrador. This alliance of six states would last only 6 and a half years, due to diplomatic and political disagreements between the nations, especially due to tensions with England and the Windsor Royal Family due to the English Civil War's international bleed-over. The Laurentine Dollar, which had been first minted in 2063 and meant to be used by the Confederation, was only used by the NAR and the GLC by the end of the Laurentine Pact's existence, before being split into two national currencies in 2067.
